Well, thats it folks the summer is a long distant memory and the cold nights are creeping in, and if your like our household we have already reached for the boiler thermostat and upped that dial!
So, in light of the colder months approaching I have been taking stock of our own winter heating bills over the last few years as we have managed to nearly half our monthly gas costs, which is nothing short of a miracle in my book.
Here are a few ideas on what you can do to cut down your winter bills both in the short term and longer term too.
It goes without saying that insulation is something that every house should have, many energy suppliers have offers on both loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. If you are on a lower income some suppliers maybe able to get this fitted for you for free!
Take A Closer Look At Your Windows & Doors
When we first moved into this house we had the old style aluminium framed windows and doors and through the winter there was a practical gale blowing the curtains. Although not a quick fix we finally got an upgrade a few years back when the doors and windows were replaced and its made an enormous difference to our heating bills.
If changing your doors and windows are not an option why not look to upgrade your window dressings, Thermal blinds and heavy weight curtains can help keep your much needed heat in.
Now there a couple of things you can do where radiators are concerned, the first being to uncover them, yep thats right move those sofas and beds away from them and let the heat go into the room. It’s obvious really, however if you cover them up then they won’t work effectively.
Secondly get radiator thermostats fitted, we found the turning down the thermostats in bedroom worked well at saving some money. Also if you have some unused rooms why not reduce the temperature on those thermostats, don’t turn them off altogether as keeping them on a little bit can help keep any damp out but instead of running them on 5 (full) why not drop them down to 1?
Change Your Energy Provider
When was the last time you checked what your paying on your gas and electric? Well, a few months back I made a switch that would save us over £300 a year.
So take those 10 minutes to compare your tariff to others around and find a cheaper one!
Upgrade You Boiler
Again not an easy fix but trust me its one that will make a massive difference to those bills. We changed boilers back in March and upgraded to a Baxi 600 Combi Boiler and a uSense Thermostat which has allowed us to run our household heating at a much more manageable level. I have control of the heating 24/7 by an app on my phone and it means i can change the temperature any time of the ay or night.
Finding a user friendly and energy efficient boiler is a priority if you are looking to invest in your home. If you want to read more about our upgrade you can do that HERE.
