For those of you that may have missed my #52LittleThings posts so far – I am taking part in weekly challenges with AXA PPP healthcare to make small changes one week at a time to become healthier and happier!
This weeks is a massive one! I have always always been such a sloucher! not helped with the fact that for at least the last 10 years I have been an office dweller and I can often be seen slouching over my desk with hunched shoulders. After some serious back pain about 3 years ago I spent time visiting a Chiropractor to try and put right my poor scrunched up spine!
So why should we stretch?
- It can improve flexibility (although some of us will never manage the splits!)
- It lengthens tight muscles, removing the stress within
- Before exercise it can potential to decrease the prospect of injury
- It can increases blood supply to muscles, making them happy bunnies!
Now for me I have suffered with SPD for over 3.5 years now, effectively this is where my ligaments in my pelvis are not holding it together due to being overstretched and this is where I need to rely on my core muscles and back so I really need to address getting them into some sort or order .. as weight gain and inactivity have taken a their toll on them and so I feel the back pain creeping back in. Even a new mattress has not helped me be pain free at night and sleeping can sometimes be pure agony.
In order to try and help my poor posture and back I have bought a hard backed chair (when I say hard backed, what I mean to say is a comfortable hard back chair) to get me off the sofa when working; and to get me back in a more supportive position while I am working freelance from home.
Also the biggest help for me will be my return to the gym this week, after 6 weeks of no gym and no stretching I have felt a massive difference and the pain is far more acute now than that it has been for a long while.
Is it wrong I am a little excited by the thoughts of going back the gym?
So do any of you suffer with back pain? If so, you may be interested a Q&A session that AXA PPP healthcare are holding on Tuesday (29th April) on their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/axappp) from 2-3pm offering advice on back care, do feel free to pop over and ask some questions!
