I am taking part in the #52LittleThings challenge with AXA PPP healthcare to make small changes in my lifestyle, one week at a time to become a healthier and happier person.
This week it’s all about doing something to help a Charity … and it seems like giving is in the air this last 12 months for me.
At the beginning of the year I took part in something that would be the most physically and emotionally draining thing I have ever done to raise money for Team Honk and Sports Relief, I was so proud to have been part of a twosome that raised in excess of £500 for charity.
Throughout the year I have made more of an effort to do little things to help charities and good causes, such as donating to fund-raising events and giving items to charity shops, but I have been thinking hard at what else I can do. Ellie from The Mummy Diary really got me thinking with her act of kindness with a homeless person last week.
Many of you wont know that in 2001 I spent some time in an emergency homeless accommodation with my then 6 month old baby, we were moved to a Women’s Aid refuge to get support from Women’s Aid workers after fleeing my home with nothing other than a plastic bag of Beth’s clothes. The Christmas of 2001 Beth and I relied upon donations, handouts and food given by others. It took almost 4 months to get any money to support us.
Although that part of my life is well and truly in the past I will always remember that someone helped my daughter and I that first Christmas and although we are not flush right now I know what I will be doing when I can this festive season.
Yesterday I visited a local shop and bought food … I only spent £4.53 but this food I left in the shop as I left it to be collected by the local food bank. It’s not much but I know someone else’s generosity helped me get back on my feet and made life that little bit more bearable at one of the toughest times in my life.
I will be donating again before Christmas and I am hoping for it to be a little more, but if we can’t afford it I know that little bit I gave will make a difference.
I am not the only one this festive time that is trying to make a difference as the folk over at AXA PPP healthcare are taking supporting a charity by the bikes as 5 members of staff cycle from London to Lapland in 24hrs on static bikes for the ITV annual charity appeal Text Santa, which raises money and awareness for 6 UK-based charities!
Keep your eyes peeled on ITV’s This Morning Programme (this morning!) as you may spot them just behind Philip Schofield!

So may it be a little or a lot, cash or time .. are you doing anything to support a charity this festive season?
