I after loosing 4.5 stones over the last year and a half I returned to play hockey for a local team last September and by no means was this an easy decision. I am probably still the largest person there and with least amount of confidence!
Now after completing the first season and feeling very smug I had planned to have the summer off to get my fitness up by going to boot camps 3-4 times a week and that is what I have done, till now!
I received a text on Sunday asking me to help, the hockey club had put a small team together to take part in what they call the summer league and play 2 matches on a Monday evening on a half size pitch with 6 players. Now until this week they had enough in the team, however they were short on numbers and would I play?
So when I set off on Monday I was feeling really excited and quite confident…. how little I knew!
I thought half sized pitch would make it easier, however after all my boot camp training I was so not used to the sprinting … sprinting is never easy for someone still as big as me, how I gave it my all (even if I wanted to throw up on the spot!)
I really didn’t realise how much I had missed playing … albeit badly, I have missed the team and the laughs and the fact when trying to get in a cheeky picture your lovely team mate tries to get in on the act.
Playing really is hard work for me but the laughs and the friendships that also come from playing make the whole thing such a fantastic time. Which is a blooming good job since I have agreed to play next Monday too!
I also got presented with an award ( I missed the AGM) and I love it! I may not of been the best player but they thought of me and remembered I had tried … although you can tell that they have never tasted my cooking!
