As a social media platform you have been by far one of my favourites.
I started with a personal account nearly 10 years ago and now run a my business with its own page too.
Your changes have baffled me, in fact it has been like playing snakes and ladders with only the snakes in place. Yes, it has been a slippery sucker of a journey but one I have dutifully read up on, followed terms and conditions for and I am always looking for new ways to engage my readers and followers and love nothing more than whiling away a few hours each day on Facebook.
After years of banging my head on a brick wall to you finally beat me into submission over and I started paying for advertising, which we all know is your game from the off. Don’t get me wrong I don’t begrudge paying for a service but even paying my money to boost doesn’t always work as I think it should.
But dear Facebook this is not my main gripe.
My main gripe is when you don’t offer support to those that play the game by the rules you set out and instead continue to allow those businesses and pages that are breaching your terms to prosper. I have to be honest the rest of us are left feeling beyond annoyed and frustrated.
You wanted a clear marker for advertisements on Facebook pages and so I have dutifully applied for the brand collaboration tool … which I have been granted.
You advocate a change in competition terms and conditions to make it fair for all by banning ‘like-gating’ back in 2014 which again I stopped offering for my page when offering a competition as you requested:
“You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page”
But why implement this change? Thats easy you said:
“To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives”
However Christmas time is upon us once more and I see hundreds of competitions being offered from pages all over Facebook. Not just the small independent businesses but the big global companies too, asking for those page likes that are supposed to have now been banned by Facebooks own terms over 3 years ago.
Why do you continue to allow this?
Half of Facebook is following your terms while the other half does at it pleases.
You have offered no clear way of reporting a Facebook page that breaches the ‘like-gate’ issue. There is no direct way of reporting this violation anywhere I can find on Facebook full stop … So why implement a massive change of terms and conditions that you won’t allow users to report when breached?
I am fast falling out of love with you dear Facebook please follow through with your stance on ‘like-gating’ and offer a real way pages can be notified of a violation for this action and lets re set a more balanced playing field for all.
If fear if I see one more competition offering some incentive to “like my page” I might just self combust…. I fear it’s going to be a long festive period at this rate.
A fed up business owner and Facebook user.
