Those of you that regularly hang around here will know that over the last few weeks we were trying out the Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment which helps protect against the causes of nappy rash – with much success!
However, what I didn’t get round to sharing with you in that post was the interesting and important work Bepanthen as a brand has been doing for all new mothers.
Bepanthen has launched an online platform dedicated to new mums, offering support in that all important month, the 10th month, after baby’s arrival.
The new site http://www.10thmonth.co.uk, aims to empower and support new mums with all the physical and emotional changes they will be going through as they find their feet on the parenting ladder.
For me that 10th month was by far the hardest. With all the excited phone calls and visits before baby was born, the weeks after baby arrived it was in my case, a time where I was quite lonely, as well as feeling physically and emotionally drained.
It is natural for the focus to be on baby in that 10th month but, for a hormonally shattered woman, it can also be very alienating too as you discover who are you going to be with a mini human strapped to you 24 hours a day. And sometimes that reality check hits like a lump hammer!
As part of the research behind the campaign to support new mums, Bepanthen asked 1,000 UK mums with children under five about their 10th month, and some of the statistics although not unexpected, are still harsh to see in black and white:
· More than two in three (68%) UK mothers have experienced some form of negative feeling in the first month of the arrival of their new baby
· Nearly half cited feeling lonely (48%)
· While two fifths (41%) claimed they lost their identity
· And 20% say they felt abandoned
Maggie Gordon-Walker, 45 and a mum of two from Brighton, is a writer and contributor to 10th Month, she commented: “Becoming a mum is an identity shift that takes time which is why 10th Month is so important. We recognise every mum as an individual, empowering her to make her own choices and reminding her that she has not been forgotten. I’m proud to have been involved in developing content for such a valuable resource now available to new mums.”
This is why I am also supporting the 10th month campaign and along with Bepanthen I am sharing the love of not only having a new baby but also, for all other mums out there too with a really amazing competition!
