OK friends and family you can all roll your eyes … you guys know how much of a geek I am and printers and anything that can be found on an office desk is well and truly on my radar.
That being said where printers are concerned I have had a love hate relationship and unfortunately its been more of the latter.
It has been no secret across my social media channels that I hate ink cartridges and on the last appointment with my accountant, the day before I was cursing as once again there was no ink in my printer and after another trip to go and buy some it took me over 2 hours to locate some and get back home … I was not impressed
Unfortunately it’s not just been on this occasion the time before this I was running round to my Mum the day before we flew off on holiday trying to print out flight tickets and insurance documents.
So recently when I was asked to review a new printer I will be honest, I was hoping this one would be different and it seems my wish has come true.
Epson seem to have listened to its users about the hassle cartridge can be and have instead brought another option … Ink Tank printers and the Epson EcoTank ET-4550 is one of them … This printer runs on no cartridges and instead has … yep you guessed it ink tanks!
My initial concerns with an all singing and dancing product like this was we may struggle with its size to fit it into the cupboard that doubles as the home office but I am super pleased to report that it was not much bigger than its predecessor that only printed, but the benefit of this printer is it really does do everything, print, scan, copy and fax!
It has a super easy front loading paper tray and the ability to accommodate most standard size paper sizes that you would need for home or small office printing.
The printer set up was really quick and straight forward, it comes with some super instructions making it very clear how to set it up and once turned on the machine takes you through each set up on the screen in front.
In the past I have struggled to set our printer up as cable free through the home wi-fi network but it took only seconds this time round all with the scrolling and ok button!
Now to the super best part …. the ink tanks!
The Epson ET-4550 comes with 2 sets of inks in black, cyan, yellow and magenta inks and on setting up the machine and adding the ink to the tanks I did carry the printer to the kitchen table as I was worried our living room floor is cream/beige but I need not of worried as they were super simple to fill.
After adding in the ink it took about 20 minutes for the inks to initialize and be ready before use, but you really can tip it in and let it do its thing once you have confirmed so you don’t need to watch over it.
Once the ink is ready to go I would strongly suggest your align the print heads and go through the rest of the cleaning and set up processes to ensure that the ink is flowing properly (as you would with any printer) as if not you might end up with lines running through your printed item (but this is normal or has been on my other printers too so it’s certainly not anything to stress over)
Overall this is certainly a printer that is designed to work … we have had this printer a few weeks and I have loved it with its double-sided printing and app enabling you to print from laptops and phones its super easy to slot into the family.
Add in the cost effectiveness at an average of 70% less than a machine working on cartridges it’s going to be good on our purse strings … and no more late night dashes to my Mums to collect our printed tickets!
