Family holidays are the thing of dreams for most families, time to spend together, to relax to reconnect, to learn new things maybe.
But after an appalling holiday a few years ago in which we all fell out and pretty much didn’t speak for a week to each other, and even came home 3 days early from a weeks holiday .. yes it was that bad! we decided to tackle the next ones slightly differently.
Now by differently I mean I have needed to stop being so anally retentive and in a sense less organised in some areas and more in others.
Always Pack Carefully
Now this sounds obvious but after the stresses of leaving that one toy at home that they can’t live without, breaking costly toys is also another hassle that you can live without too.
Dont over pack, simple yes but make a list and be realistic. Most places that you will visit will have a washing machine or washing facilities of some kind so if you have this option to hand washing clothes while you’re there mean not having to overload!
If you travel with babies/children some UK airports have a super option to order your baby milk, nappies wipes and food from the pharmacy in the departures lounge (this will save you trying to squeeze it into your luggage allowance and will also make things easier and on hand for your flight!
Pack Activities For The Plane/Car
Where possible pack toys that are less sentimental if they get lost there will not be tears! before our last trip we visited a £1 shop and bought things to play and create easily without the stress if they got lost, damaged or broken.
We also used technology to our advantage and kept our toddler super happy with some music and videos… In fairness they were not used as much as I thought it would be but it was great as a diversion tactic!
Remember The Sun Protection
Again this really is being obvious, however I made this mistake in the past. underestimating how much factor 50 suncream I would need only to find an £18 price attached to buy more!
Not only that but sunglasses and a hat are also super helpful. We got hats with our little mans swim costume which were super!
Improvising, making do and letting things slide for a few days is not going to affect your child. once home that routine will be back!
Take Quiet Time When Needed
Our holidays in the past have been very chaotic moving from one thing to another at a rapid rate of knots …. however our last couple of holidays we implemented quiet time when the grouchiness started to kick in.
Reading and colouring are our quiet activities of choice
Taking A Nap Is Always A Bonus!
It’s been a long while since Joshua really had a regular nap but on holidays we let him sleep anytime he needs .. it stops some of the mardiness but also means he is in a more reasonable mood throughout the day. If we are lucky it means we get one too and who doesn’t love a mid afternoon nap?!
Not all of our holiday’s were hard work.
In 2012 we eloped and married with no one knowing and taking only the Children …
I think sometimes holidays are what you make of them …
But sunshine and a fab location are always helpful!
What tips do you have about traveling on holiday with children?
