I know I am no technical genius and so it might come as a surprise to some that I was asked to try out some really new tech for the home … However with a family to protect and many of readers having families too I thought it would be great to try out this new piece of kit to see just what it could do for us.
So why did we want to try out the new Arlo security system from NETGEAR for me I have to be honest and say the fact it is totally wire free was very first appeal. It’s not that I am lazy but my time is super precious and finding time to get something installed or something that might need regular maintenance is never going to happen with me I don’t do faff and fuss so with only a single bracket (which requires one screw in each) that is about my limits (although being 7 months pregnant I did get someone in to do that for me … ladders and pregnancy don’t tend to go well)
When it arrived installing and setting up the base router was super simple with a single power cable from plug socket to base station and then one cable from the base station to the router…. How simple is that!
The final piece to getting the kit up and running was to down load the Arlo app to my iPhone and then to log in on my laptop, go to setting up a new device and then press the sync on the base station and each camera in turn in less than 5 minutes both my cameras were up and running and with 5 minutes from my handy person and the drill the whole process took a mere 10 minutes to install!
Once up and running I have to say I have been thrilled with it, we altered the sensitivity to stop the cats on the street setting it off and we were able to set both of the cameras up on the gardens so we had our main entry points to the house covered and even at night with the night vision it really was amazing at how much the cameras picked up! (including someone one on the street at 3am getting in their car) … although it looks pitch black we have motion sensors on the outside lights and once they go off the camera picks up so much details.
This has now been installed for a week and I have to say I am not sure how we coped without it, The system really has given us so much peace of mind, which is odd as I hadn’t realised how nice it would be to keep a floating eye on things … it has also helped me argue my case with a delivery drivers company that insisted that they had delivered to me and I could confirm that we had no footage of anyone crossing onto our property … I will take that a bonus win!
I have been throughly blown away with this bit of kit and I am totally in love with what it’s offered us in terms of peace of mind and ease of use.
The only thing that I have been looking to invest in is to get some covers for mine as the old brickwork makes the cameras stand out … however I know this is a massive bonus for some people but for me I would like to turn them black so they are not so obvious on the eye… after a quick tweet with Arlo on Twitter it seems I can in fact buy silicone skins for my cameras if I want … so I am super happy not only at the quick response on Twitter but also that I can turn mine a different colour!
Overall I am thrilled with the Arlo Home Security System and love how easy the install is but also the fact you can adapt the system to work for your needs, from inside or out, 1 camera or 5 or even if you want to use the basic account for recording which is free or if you want to pay an annual fee to help look after your security you can so it really is customisable for you.
