A few years back we discovered the love of the October Half Term holiday and has made it a regular in our calendars.
Unfortunately life got in the way and we had missed the last couple after a horrific half term holiday not long after I started my blog and it became a downward spiral of never happening.
This year however we vowed we would spend more time as a family and quality time at that, preferably in Ollie’s books by the sea somewhere. So this January we booked and paid to go on a half term getaway with Haven to their newly purchased site ‘Thornwick Bay‘ located on the Yorkshire coast, which just so happens to be a family love of ours and put us right where we like to be with minimal fuss and full central heating in one of their chalets.
On arrival to Haven’s Thornwick Bay site we were somewhat disgusted to find out that there was in fact no water to our chalet and the water had been off for over 24 hours.
Furious didn’t quite cut it for us. Although it was not Havens fault that there was a problem with Yorkshire Water. It was increasingly upsetting to have to find out they knew about it for over a day and did nothing to warn us before arrival so we could bring supplies or so we could cancel if we wanted too!
Our first day and night were taken up with trying to source bottled water and we were on the verge of packing up and going home.
As day 2 dawned thankfully they had a breakthrough with the water and we were back to having a full supply so we decided to carry on regardless with the holiday even if it had ruined the first day and night we were determined we weren’t going to loose anymore of our precious family time.
So we explored the site and went swimming (the site pool is one of the best I have seen for a Haven site) we embraced a low-key tea of Super Noodles and hot dog sausages which has become standard holiday fare these days and Jacob and I got in an afternoon nap while Ollie and Joshua went to explore the path to the bay.
On arrival back to the chalet the boys had a super time, however with no pushchair access and no baby carrier Jacob and I were destined to never discover the sea from the site, although this soon became Ollie and Joshua’s ‘secret world’ and several adventures were had throughout the week there.
Last week we also fitted in a trip to Flamborough Lighthouse
And got to enjoy some stunning views and grass walks
Although we couldn’t make it down to the beach area it was really wonderful to get those cobwebs blown away!
A trip to Bridlington and Filey
We threw in some pennies in exchange for wishes
We walked, we talked, we ate ice cream and we played together as a family.
We even discovered a new place that we have never visited before .. Sewerby Hall and Gardens which we are certainly going to go back to again with its stunning hall, fantastic views, parks, zoo and games it’s at the top of our list to visit again!
We may not have had the most party packed week but we did have a wonderful time reconnecting and being together … even if the lack of water started our holiday badly.
What did you get up to this half term?
