Amusing Infants and Toddlers
The youngest ones can sometimes be the hardest to please because, at this age, children are actively seeking to gather more information from their environment, and therefore often have a short attention span. Which is why you might find an attraction such as the London Science Museum a great place to visit, as there are lots of engaging interactive exhibits which they can go back and forth between! There are also lots of play fountains throughout London which young children love splashing in on hot days, such as the fountains in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park; though you’ll want to make sure you’ve brought a towel, and maybe a change of clothes (or two).
Entertaining Pre-teens and Young Teenagers
Luckily, there are a lot of attractions in the London Science Museum which will appeal to children in this category too, but another great alternative for children in the 8-14 region would be to head towards one of London’s zoo, theme parks or one of the adventure playgrounds. The ZSL London Zoo, in particular, has a great range of attraction to keep children entertained for at least a few hours.
Tackling the Teenagers
Teenagers can be one of the trickiest audiences to figure out, and the key to cracking this case is knowing where your child’s interests lie. Sometimes, the simplest option is the best, so try heading down Oxford street and keep the family occupied with a bit of window shopping. The good thing about shopping in Central London is that there is usually something for everyone, from Hamley’s Toy store for the youngest to Selfridges Department store for the fashion conscious teenager. Alternatively, attractions such as the London Dungeons or London Bridge experience are also a popular choice for teenagers.
Parents deserve fun too!
Don’t forget to do something fun for yourselves! Why grab some cheap London theatre tickets and head to a show? Or go out for a nice evening meal as a family? Sometimes it’s nice to do something which isn’t all child orientated, and you might find that your kids enjoy getting to take part in something which seems more grown up!
Whatever you decide to do on your day out, whether you combine these activities, or decide to only head to one or two attractions, just being able to spend time as a family will ensure that you have a great day (even if there are a few tears along the way).
