I have often blogged about my passion for teaching our children to cross the road safely, and about teaching them at a young age the handy tool of learning the green cross code.
I am beginning to think its just me that practices this method of crossing a road.
Over recent week while I have been going to my new gym I have to use a pelican crossing to get there and crossing a very busy main through road in town which has 4 directions, and I have to be honest I have been shocked at the sheer stupidity of some people, from every age range.
I arrive at the crossing, I press the button and duly wait …. and yes it’s not the quickest crossing … but we are not talking about a lifetime wait. First a group of teens … and over they go without looking in any direction what’s so ever, nor the colour of the man on the crossing …. a car comes round the corner and has to break (while the lights are on green for them) some jeering from the teens followed by laughter
I know it’s not my business so I inwardly seethed …
Next to the crossing is the lady and her shopping trolley … and over she goes again without a care or a look ….
My blood is now boiling …
The final straw comes when a Mum with a child of school age .. never even stopped at the crossing and walks out dragging the school age child and pushing now one-handed on the pushchair.
I am all in favour of personal injury claims most people who have an accident deserve to be compensated for their pain and anguish and lost earning, but some people really do think it’s not their responsibility to cross the road safely.
It’s not even the case that it’s just this crossing in town, or it just happens to me when I am on my own, as it also happens when I am on the other side of town holding Joshua’s hand talking loudly to him about waiting for the green man before we cross and still folk jostle us out the way and walk out …
Is it just me that thinks this is nuts? .. It’s like my biggest irritation at the moment.
Is road safety just not important anymore?
