I think for most new parents and parents of non sleeping small children it would be fair to say sleep deprivation is pure evil and can be the thing that breaks you.
I went through a stage a little while ago with 2 hourly feeding and having a reflux baby that I couldn’t function, couldn’t think straight and was becoming really emotional and felt really unstable with everything.
From that very bad place we were at with Jacobs acute Reflux diagnosis we made the change from breast milk to Reflux formula and the implantation of a more formal bedtime routine we were thrilled to start getting some proper sleep with a last bottle in our room at 9pm we were amazingly excited as Jacob discovered he loved getting up at between 5 am – 6.30am and had dropped the 3 am feed which was more than acceptable for me … in fact it was AMAZING …
However after several weeks of a calm and soothing bedtimes something changed last week and between 7.30pm – 8.30pm Jacob became almost Ferrel with crying and being inconsolable so Hubs very wisely suggested that we needed to take him to bed earlier.
I mocked him at first but I have to eat my own words when in fact for nearly 10 days now Jacob has been having his last bottle between 7pm – 7.30pm and has been sleeping through till 5am-6am each morning and waking with the most amazing smile on his face.
Jacob will be 4 months old next week and it seems amazing to have him sleeping through but it has got me thinking, is this just a fluke? Or in fact is it anything to do with the night-time routine?
Answers on a postcard please folks as whatever it is down to I am loving finally getting some sleep into my weary brain!
It sounds like you might have cracked it! Little E slept through for about a month, in month two, then it took him about nine months to sleep through properly again. Every baby is different and I’m a firm believer in doing what works to get you through those early months. It sounds like this is working well, embrace it while realising that it could change any day!
lol every night i am climbing those stairs in trepidation that tonights the night it breaks and he is up every 2 hours again! …eek
Honestly? I think breast v bottle makes the difference. I think formula fed babies sleep better than breastfed babies. I’m not knocking breastfeeding one bit, I still think that is the best option. I formula fed 3 of my children from the start and they all slept through from 2 weeks. I breastfed Jack at the start and he was very unsettled but as soon as I started formula feeding (because I was struggling with breastfeeding for a few reasons) he started sleeping through and now he goes from 8pm-5/6am and a lot of my friends that are having issues, all breastfeed! X
I hope for your sake it isnt a fluke but be prepared as you know kids, they like to lull us into a false sense of security then run rife.
Aww fingers crossed lovely. He is such a wee cutie xx
Our son has had a consistent bedtime routine from very early on, he’s been bottle fed from being a week old and he still hasn’t cracked sleeping through consistently ! I really just think it depends on the child x
