A little while back with a small baby in the picture and time rapidly passing by since his birth Ollie and I had yet to settle on having something personalised for Jacob as the standard issue casts and prints all seemed very boring and bland.
When the lovely folks at Handprint Carving Co got in touch and asked us if we would like review one of their products we jumped at the chance, after all I am somewhat obsessed with oak in the home so having something personalised in such a stylish and classical medium was always going to be something I was interested in.
The Handprint Carving Co offer 2 different products currently, the Ladder is made up of your child’s hand and footprints carved into solid oak leaving wonderfully tactile raised prints.
If you want to personalise your ladder further you can choose from four engraving fonts, two types of rope and between four choices of 3-colour twine.
The second option they make is a more classical option, the ‘Postcard’ and it contains one raised hand or footprint (you can choose) that you can personalise the piece by choosing between four engraving fonts for the inscription which is engraved along the bottom edge of the frame. The age/date inscription is engraved at 90 degrees.
We choose the Postcard option to review and a few days later a pack arrived through the door with detailed instructions on how to make the mould and what to do once you have captured your child’s hand or foot.
I have to say I was rather anxious about actually getting Jacobs foot print and did put it off a couple of days before doing it as I thought it might be fiddly but I have to say it was really really easy!
The mouldable dough type stuff was like working almost with play doh and was really easy to soften in order to get the foot print from him.
The super good news is if you don’t get the print first time you can re do the print and start again till you get the print you want.
I did 2 prints with Jacob as the first was really wiggly!
After getting the print you have to bake the mould in the oven and then let it cool before packaging up it in the self-addressed padded envelope.
About a week later my finished oak carving arrived in a beautiful presentation case and I have to be honest I did shed a tear.
That moment in my child’s life had been captured so beautifully that I could feel his foot forever, the lines of his toes and dips and grooves of his heel were all embedded in the oak it really blew me away at just how much detail had been captured.
The ‘Postcard’ carving comes with the option to wall mount or display freestanding so you are not restricted on where you can display it.
The only thing I was disappointed in was not discovering them sooner and managing to capture his newborn footprint!
