Last year I had the pleasure of discovering a company that was supporting and empowering younger girls into discovering football but also supporting the women professional football and I could not have been more blown away.
SSE, one of the UK’s leading energy companies that supplies 8.21 million customers made a commitment to help support girls only football provisions and effectively became the energy behind women’s football. SSE has supported not only the professional players but also those young girls at the grassroots of the game too with establishing over 60 clubs allowing girls to discover this male dominated sport for themselves.
Football was something that I wanted to play as a young girl but schools only allowed the boys to play in lesson and with nothing in the area to allow girls to play I became a hockey player instead and part of me will always be a little sad that in the 1990’s gender stereotyping in sport was a thing.
I want all 3 of my children to be able to choose what they want to do in life from the sport they play to the jobs that they do and I want it to be based on their wants and not if they are boys or girls, men or women and SSE believe that everyone deserves the same opportunities. This is why I think SSE’s campaign is such a great idea and one I wholeheartedly adore.
Sport in general especially as a child can be such a motivating and empowering thing. After all learning a new skill, making new friends and confidence building can only ever be helpful to growing minds especially in such formative years.
Which is why the recent launch of SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Clubs is so exciting as it will provide girls aged 5-11 with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. SSE continue to show their commitment to increasing participation in the women’s game through this new initiative.
The clubs will run from spring through summer on a weekly basis and aim to provide a fun and safe space for girls to learn the game and make friends.
This coming weekend is the SSE Women’s FA Cup Final and they are supporting kids once more with the ‘kids go free’ ticket so even more people can enjoy the beautiful game of football and support our women’s team.
So why not venture down to Wembley Stadium and take in the atmosphere while you get to experience what the Women’s team has to offer on the pitch!
