Today is International Women’s Day so it seems only fitting to take a look as a recently compiled survey from the content marketing agency, Axonn Media. They have compiled a survey of working parents within the marketing field to find out their thought on the professional challenges they faced daily.
It would appear that working mothers are still four times more likely to work part time and 62% of Mums felt that becoming a parent had hindered their career/career progression in some way, as opposed to just 24% of the fathers surveyed who felt the same way.
As you know I work from home within this field so find the results rather interesting, prior to having the kids I was actually a medical secretary but this was just a job I did to ensure we could pay the bills, I am actually a qualified human resources manager. Parenthood certainly changed my career path as I needed to find something flexible I could do while still looking after the kids at home. Childcare costs are far too great to mean going back into an office full time and besides I would miss them. Working from home however isn’t without its struggles as I can easily be distracted by all the other household chores which need doing and there are no cut off hours – I am in the office so if a job comes in and it needs doing urgently I can often be found working into the night – not something I would be doing if I were office based elsewhere.
Axonn found that flexible working has risen up the list of priorities for those working in marketing and is now rated above factors such as their teams, commuting times and working environments, which only career progression, salary and “doing something I’m good at ” being rated higher on the priorities list.
Why not take a look at the survey findings for yourself, this infographic has some of them laid out for you – do any surprise you at all?
I’ve been told before I have it easy working from home, but what those people do seem to forget is that I do still look after the children on my own, fit in working and the household chores all at the same time. There is nothing easy about that really it just means I am super organised and can multi-task rather well!
