There is something about birthday cakes that totally freaks me out, maybe it’s my aversion to baking or the fact I am useless at fiddly things and far better with the big things like sledge hammers.
However a couple of years ago for Joshua’s 5th birthday he wanted a Nintendo castle for his cake and with funds a little tight I decided it couldn’t be that hard … I was wrong. Cake makers across the planet you have my utmost respect.
There were tears from me every 10 minutes and after 3 days of total exhaustion it became clear that instead of keep trying to make it better when it clearly was crap it was time to give up.
Joshua loved his cake but for the entire duration of the party I cringed at its wonky turrets and appalling icing work. I vowed that day to never make a kid’s birthday cake again!
Until a few weeks ago when I struggled to locate anything relating to Fireman Sam, which is Jacobs favourite thing on the planet right now.
So I hatched a plan.
Who said I had to pay £50 for a wonderfully talented cake maker to make one, instead it was time to cheat.
After finding a lovely lady on eBay I bought the icing creations for something similar to Fireman Sam for a few pounds and bought pre baked and iced cakes.
So last Saturday I bit the bullet and made a start putting the cake together … after using a tube of pre made icing I stuck it all together in less than 5 minutes and if I am honest I love it.
I don’t think I will ever attempt to make a birthday cake from scratch ever again!
Jacob loved his cake, I loved not crying and embracing my own inadequacies and spending my time on other things I am good at like cleaning or decorating instead.
