Being a super pasty sun avoider over the years it has been hard to find sun protection products that work well at keeping my pastiness protected for longer than 2 hours and that don’t make me feel like I am coated in ten tons of product.
Years and years ago I loved an all day product but it left my clothes stained and it had a really funny smell so had been trying product after product yeah year in the hopes I could find one that suited not only me but the kids too.
A few months ago I discovered a new brand that had missed my sun lotion seeking radar. It was mentioned by a friend and so immediately I headed over to their site to see what they were all about and what they had to offer.
Ultrasun is formulated in Switzerland using a patented liposome technology and their photostable products require just a once-a-day application for protection against UV rays even after towel dying, swimming and all day activities.
Obviously this sounded too good to be true so when I was sent some samples to try I was obviously excited but dubious in equal measures.
The 100ml samples that were sent were ideal sizes for the nappy bag and with the option of the Ultrasun Extreme sensitive formula option with a 50+ SPF it was ideal for baby Jacobs Olive skin but also my pasty fair Joshua too! Ollie and I went for the family 30 SPF protection and the good news is all their products are hypoallergenic with no emulsifiers, perfume or parabens, which can help reduce the risk of allergies.
I loved how easy both products went on to the skin. We put ours on after breakfast a good 30-40 mins before heading out into sun and found it left no residue and left the skin feeling soft and non greasy once it had been soaked in.
Here in the UK I haven’t needed to top up during the day on the boys or myself as we don’t spend all day in the sun and often seek out shade. Where Joshua is concerned being able to put it on in the morning before school and know that he is covered for break time play has been a wonderful feeling.
After loving it so much I went on to buy Ultrasun’s 400ml family pumps to take on our recent 2 week holiday to Italy and although certainly not the cheapest on the market they worked a treat and with its 2 years AFTER opening against the average of 6-12 months for most other products it works out better value in the long run than buying once and throwing it away at the end of the summer.
Ollie hates spending money on something he thinks he can buy cheaper so I didn’t tell him the price but on the second week of the holiday I did disclose the prices and even he said that they had been a wise investment. The Family 30 SPF starts at £19 for 100 ml up to £46 for the 400 ml pumps and the Extreme 50+ SPF starts at £22 for the 100 ml and goes up to £50 for the 400 ml pump.
We all applied after breakfast while abroad and then did a super quick top up mid to late afternoon as although I know it’s based on only applying once a day there are other factors to consider such as the amount of clothing rub and how much towel drying and swimming there is. So for peace of mind more than anything else we applied twice daily. Italy’s temperatures did reach a stocking 34 degrees however and on days out where shade wasn’t an option the products were amazing to have.
Obviously I used sun protection clothing on both boys to try to maximise protections all over.
Ultrasun is one of the more expensive products we have used but as a family the Family 30 SPF and Extreme 50+ SPF have been totally amazing for peace of mind and even the 34 degrees heat in Italy didn’t lead to any sunburn even on the most delicate skin of Jacob.
We loved the peace of mind and protection so much we invested in the 400 ml pumps for Italy and have not been disappointed.
Disclaimer: We were sent some 100 ml samples earlier in the year and loved the products so much personally we then bought the bigger sized products shown in some of the pictures.
