Since returning to school this term Joshua has asked numerous times about going onto packed lunches and I am honest the thought of it makes me want to scream in terror.
After all what do you put in a child’s lunchbox?
I hated packed lunches as a child and loved my school lunches but it seems even though Joshua is enjoying school meals the lure of some of his friends having packed lunches is strong.
Recently “A Flora-commissioned University of Leeds study recently revealed that only 1.6% of children in England receive a packed lunch that meets the nutritional standards set for school meals, with just 17% of lunches containing any kind of vegetables or salad” and that is scary in my book but it only goes to prove I have reason to worry.
Thanks to the fact Every Flora tub contains plant oils, such as sunflower, rapeseed and linseed oils. Flora is lower in saturated fats than butter and contains omega 3 and 6 I decided to let it guide me to their meal planner for Joshua and I to give it a go. So have accepted Flora’s challenge to do some trial runs of healthy packed lunches to see how we feel about moving him over onto packed lunches at school.
First on our list of packed lunches is the Pasta Tossed with Tuna and Fresh Herbs that we found on Flora’s site. However my first monumental error was the missing ‘Fresh Herbs’ – Although I did skip this by along with the mushrooms as Joshua hates them and instead added in a spring onion.
Next on the ideas front the handy Flora meal planner Tuna and Broccoli Quiche that I slightly adapted and added in some sweetcorn that wanted using up into.
I am a massive fan of quiche but have always bought my quiche as I presumed it was super hard work but loved the idea of making my own and adapting it to fit in ingredients we love and with Joshua’s new found love of them it’s a no brainer to have a go!
This being the first occasion of making it I stuck with the recipe on the Flora site.
We both loved the quiche and now I have a super tasty pastry recipe with Flora Buttery I might even give it ago changing the filling to include, mushroom, bacon, sausage and tomatoes and make a breakfast quiche!
