Teddy bears really are magical mystical things aren’t they, from a best pal and buddy to a secret keeper and hand holder. Teddy bears are the barer of our childhood in their furry grip and even as adults most of us still have to have a cuddle with a lonesome bear.
Recently I was introduced to a very special company indeed.
Merrythought bears are quintessentially English teddy bear makers located in the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge in Shropshire and are the only remaining British teddy bear makers.
The bears are made from a variety of bespoke mohair and other fabrics including aplaca, silk and cottons and are fully jointed with articulated arms, legs and heads. Some even come with a ‘growl’ or a music box and most can be personalised with a choice of bow or even embroidered stitching to the left foot.
We were recently asked if we would like to look anthem in more detail and order one each for the boys and I was thrilled, these bears are what I call ‘proper’ bears and neither boy has one like this.
I ordered a London Gold Personalised bear (£107.50) for Joshua with navy bow and Joshua’s name and date of birth embroidered into his foot in gold thread and a Shrewsbury bear (£90) for Jacob with a baby blue ribbon and his name and date of birth embroidered into his foot too.
When they arrived I was not alone in being excited, Joshua fell in love with his bear instantly, the detailing is beautiful and his soft golden mohair is super cuddly.
Jacobs bear stands slightly smaller in height but I think he is packed with more personality, his slightly longer mohair fur means he looks a little less tidy than Joshua’s bear but that’s why we chose him for Jacob, they both have a cheeky look about them!
With his baby blue ribbon and his movable joints too I can see Jacob and bear becoming inseparable!
Both bears have immaculate stitching and are incredibly well made, the shoulder and hip joints means you can position them into a sitting and bending positions.
These beautifully hand crafted bears are by far the nicest I have personally seen and would amazing gifts, they are not the cheapest bears but I honestly think you get what you pay for with these bears, they ooze quality from every stitch.
Thank you Merrythought for allowing my boys to start their teddy adventures with such beautiful companions, I have no doubt these guys will stand the test of time, and everything my boys can throw at them.
Let the teddy adventures begin….
