Since reading all about my lovely friend Ellie from The Mummy Diary and her trip Strawberry picking and remembering my pledge I made for my #52LittleThings with AXA PPP healthcare to enjoy seasonal foods it was a must that at least some of us would make it to be gatherers of some deliciously juicy seasonal fruits!
Since it was way too long since Ellie and had a catch up we decided that fruit picking and a picnic would be idea for the tots and for us too and with a picnic and cake it really was going to be a good outing … and I certainly wasn’t wrong!
With temperamental weather over the previous few days, on the morning of our picking party we headed off to the field smothered in red hot sunshine and no rain clouds in sight!
On arriving it was so great to see Ellie and her beautiful daughter and Joshua was so excited at seeing his friend again!
We set off with our empty punnets but I have to say Joshua was more than excited when we realised that there were real life strawberries on the plants .. although being somewhat obsessed with the ‘white’ ones he soon got into the picking lark, swiftly followed by the pinching! …. he was mesmerised by the fact he could take one from the plant and pop it straight in his mouth, it really was a joy to see his inquisitive face in the delights of the PYO field.
Having said that I did have to tell him to stop after the first 8 Strawberries as I am sure the field owner would have been mightily peeved with such greed but the magic of the PYO had him fully in its sights and to be able to witness that I will be grateful!
We even squeezed in some raspberry picking and we gained some rhubarb along the way too! …. but the icing on the already pretty fab day was the picnic in the field after some seriously fantastic fruit finding! … Massive thank you to Ellie for her superb cakes and peanut butter creation (that she just has to blog so I can try and make it) I promise next time it won’t be so long till we meet up.
This may have been our first pick your own adventure Joshua and I .. but It won’t be our last!

Looks like you had a lovely time. Sunshine, a picnic and fields to roam is fabulous, but throw in some PYO and it’s perfect!
Jaime says
it sure is 🙂

We’ve been fruit picking too, although no raspberries were rioe enough we had tonnes of strawberries! My son also was rather good of eating as opposed to just popping into the basket! And how lovely to meet up with a friend too.

We love PYOs. It’s win-win. Freshest fruit and outside fun. Must have been lovely to witness Joshua discovering where strawberries come from. Tastiest experience! #CountryKids

looks like you had a lovely time. When I was 13 my mum needed extra money and we were living in kent at the time, she took me and my 3 year old brother strawberry picking the idea was she would work I would watch my brother, seemed okay to me but she told me we couldn’t eat any strawberries I didn’t mind but to my embarasement I could not get my 3 year old brother off those strawberries he was covered in juice luckily mum didn’t get into trouble.
Jaime says

I am very envious of you, we have been looking for a PYO local and there is nothing. I would love to do this with the boys as I did when I was a child. Oh and my boys have no fear at all and wanted to go on the bigger course, but were too small at Go Ape!
Jaime says
thats such a shame re finding a PYO near you, normally there is lots near us but we could only find this one this year.
re Go ape your boys are my heros!! x

Looks like a great time was had by all. Lucky to get the raspberries ripe, ours aren’t quite there yet. Maybe next weekend.
N also struggled with picking the unripe ones at first. Took him a while to remember to look for the red all the way round before picking! By next year they’ll be pros

Sounds like you had a great time! I used to love doing this when I was younger and keep meaning to take my two – I think they would both be like J though and more would go in their mouth than the basket!

Looks like so much fun, I really must do this (but I say that every year) and I suspect I would have a child who would be quite eager to try before we buy! No harm in a few but I think we would like to get some in the punnet to take home! Looks like such a great family day out xx
Jaime says

I was introducing new fruits to my son. He only eats banana and apple and I am trying to make him eat some more variety but he just wont. Maybe if he can see the strawberry from fields like this he would try them and eat them! But we dont have one near us tho =( #countrykids
Louise says
