Life’s better when you’re at your mental and physical peak. At those moments, it becomes easier to dream big, you’re able to better manage your relationships, and you can achieve a level of confidence that can really push you forward.
Being mentally and physically well takes time and effort, especially in a world that seems set up to provide the opposite. Happily, researchers have developed a good understanding of the habits that can lead to mental and physical wellness. We’ll run through a host of them below.
Get Outdoors
Did you know that the great outdoors can have a hugely positive impact on your mental state? Spending just fifteen minutes in a green space has been shown to raise happiness levels. If you can spend two hours in nature each week, then you’ll be significantly reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
No matter where you live, you’ll have the great outdoors somewhere nearby, even if you have to drive for a little while. Look at committing to going for a hike every week or so, and you’ll be supporting your mental health — and also improving your physical conditioning, too.
Regular Exercise
The main benefit of exercising isn’t improving your physical health; it’s improving your mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, a feel-good chemical that makes you happier. And of course, you’ll also be giving your body what it needs to be at its best, too. Most people understand the importance of exercise, but many struggle to find the time to actually do it. If you can’t imagine that you can make it to the gym every day, then bring exercise into your home. If you have a treadmill and a few weights, you can easily get a full workout right from the comfort of your own property. Start your day with exercise and a cold shower, and you’ll be ready to handle whatever the day throws at you.
Work on Dissolving Your Bad Habits
What you don’t do can sometimes be as influential as what you do. For instance, if you’re drinking alcohol or ordering fast food multiple times a week, then it’s unlikely that you’ll be at your physical and mental best. Take a look at your bad habits, and see if you can give them up, at least for a little while. You’ll normally only need a month or so before you begin seeing the benefits, so start by eliminating them from your diet for that period of time. Once the month is up, it’s unlikely that you’ll run back to your old habit!
Appreciate What You Have
Finally, remember that sometimes, boosting your mental well-being is mostly about changing your perspective. We tend to focus on the things that we don’t have, and in the process, lose sight of all the things that we do have. Keeping a daily gratitude journal is a terrific way to remind yourself of all the good things in your life — if you have friends, food in the fridge, and a healthy body, then you’re in a good position to enjoy life.
