Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest problems new parents face. This lack of sleep can affect all aspects of your life, so it’s vital to find ways to get as much rest as you can every day. I for one struggled in the first few months and suffered some horrible side effects of sleep deprivation.
Below are five of the most effective ways new parents can get more sleep
1. Invest in a Comfortable Bed and Mattress
When it’s time for bed, you want to be as comfortable as possible, so that you gradually fall into a deep, uninterrupted sleep. The bed and mattress you sleep on will determine just how comfortable you will be.
If your bed is too hard or too soft, it has the potential to make you restless and deprive you of that all-important rest you need at night and in the early days every minute counts.
Some beds and mattresses are better than others, so you should be aware of the options available. You can find a wide range of high quality Hypnos beds and Hypnos mattresses for sale online which could make your life a lot easier, especially in your first months as a new parent.
2. Establish a Routine
Unfortunately, many new parents have a lot of things on their plate when their baby arrives. This means they are not always as prepared for this event as they should be. It’s vital to plan and establish some kind of routine that allows you and your partner to frequently recharge your batteries, so that you are both able to cope with events that take place in your personal and working lives.
3. Reduce Your Other Activities and Responsibilities
Drastic changes take place in your life when you have a new addition in your family. This means you have to change your lifestyle. In most instances, parents may have to reduce the activities they take part in and the responsibilities they have.
To do this effectively, prioritise each of these activities and responsibilities. You may have to sacrifice the least important of these activities and responsibilities, so that you are under less pressure and can get a good night’s sleep.
4. Take Turns Minding Your Baby
A problem shared is a problem halved and this is particularly true when couples aren’t getting enough sleep. Instead of both parents losing sleep at the same time, you should agree to take turns minding your baby. The person who is not minding the baby is then able to rest and take up their baby minding duties with more energy later on when the other parent gets their opportunity to take a break, we referred to this as tag teaming the tot.
5. Sleep in Separate Rooms
If you do take turns minding your baby, it’s a good idea to sleep in separate rooms, so that the person taking a break from baby duty can get an uninterrupted, comfortable rest. This may involve converting a spare room into a temporary bedroom or using another room in your home. We found this really important once Ollie went back to work and needed sleep before driving to work. Once Ollie was home mid afternoon I snoozed the afternoon away instead.
A lack of sleep is a key concern for new parents. It leads to poorer decision making and can even be dangerous. Following the tips above will ensure that you and your partner don’t have this problem.
Good Luck!
