A Guide to Healthy Hair as You Age

A Guide to Healthy Hair as You Age The Oliver\\\'s Madhouse
Hair loss is a common side effect of age for a significant number of men in the United States, and all around the globe, for that matter. It is estimated that over 60% of all men will have experienced a certain amount of hair loss by the time they reach the age of 35. Further to this, when a man turns 50, there is an 85% chance that he will have significantly thinning hair.

The question is, is it possible to prevent the degree to which a male loses his hair? The answer, in short, is yes. Taking proper care of your hair and your health in general can have a positive influence when it comes to slowing down the rate at which your hair starts to thin. However, it is important to note that hair loss is largely genetic, so there is only so much that you can do to prevent it. Having said that, here are some tips.

Avoid washing it everyday

Your hair needs its natural oils in order to maintain its sheen and fullness. So, steer clear of washing it every day if you can. Unless it is extremely oily, you should be able to get away with shampooing approximately three to four times a week at most.

Use conditioner

It can be tempting to hop in and out of the shower as quickly as possible—but don’t forget to condition your hair! It should be a mandatory step following every shampoo session, even if you use a sulphate-free shampoo.

Eat a protein- and fat-rich diet

The food that you eat is directly reflected in the health (or lack thereof) of your crowning glory. As such, it is vital that you include plenty of protein and healthy fats in your daily meal plan. Think lots of fatty fish for those essential omega-3s, along with green, leafy vegetables, avocadoes, eggs, and berries.

Investigate your medication

Did you know that certain drugs can exacerbate hair loss in both men and women? These drugs include a few acne medications, some antibiotics, mood stabilizers, as well as drugs that have been created to help lower cholesterol.

What to do if you have already lost a lot of your hair

If you are past the point of preventing hair loss from taking place as you age, you may be wondering what treatments and solutions are available to remedy the problem. There are many to consider, including FDA-approved drugs in the form of Minoxidil or Finasteride, serums, laser treatments, and more. However, hair transplants are the only sure-fire solution.

Concerned about the hair transplant cost? Fear not. There are several hair transplant clinics out there that offer different finance options to help make the cost more manageable. Also, keep in mind that the cost of a hair transplant depends on a variety of factors, including the amount of hair that will need to be transplanted and the severity of the hair loss in general. Hair transplants for minimal to moderate hair loss can cost as little as $4,000 in total.

Here’s to many more years of healthy, youthful-looking hair!
