Exercise for me has always been about being part of a team. I struggle with classes and gyms as I find them boring and uncompetitive and without the thrill of the chase as it were I really do not thrive.
Now for some time I have been on a weight loss mission and in the September of 2012 after loosing a more than respectable 4.5 stones I decided I need to up the ante on the weight loss front and Hockey was the ideal for me. However my confidence was on the floor and the thought of all these super fit folk relying on me as part of their team terrified me but I know if I didn’t do it now I never would.
So after my initial terrified few weeks of training I was asked to play in a game for the 3rd team and I never looked back. It brought back some amazing memories of my time as a teen playing for some really amazing teams including the county team (all be it for a short time) but I always had a little paranoid niggle that I didn’t have the right kit while the rest of my team seemed to have theirs. So at the end of the first season I was still playing in my plain purple or white t-shirts and still feeling the niggle of not quite fitting in. Its funny isn’t it how something as simple a uniform can make you feel you belong!
So when this season started I made a bee line for the super lady who orders kit and after having a chat about lengths and sizes she said she could get some made that were a bigger more roomy for the larger round the middle person, so they weren’t so skin-tight…. perfect!
With bated breath I have waited for my tops to arrive since September and this Saturday for my last match this season due to my operation fast approaching I turned up to be given my tops! I really felt like it was Christmas as I also have my very own number on the back instead of using while tape stuck to my back with the number 111 (since that’s easy to stick on!)
For my final match this season I walked onto that pitch with a happy heart and a grin on my face that even the 6-0 loss could not wipe away.
I am part of a Hockey team and I love it!
How fantastic, it’s great that it’s your “thing” too x
Ouch to the 6-0! But so happy that you found the hocket spirit again! I have been threatening for many a year but just haven’t quite got there yet x
Great stuff that you are very much part of the team. I totally get what you say about exercise – the gym is not for me.
Very well done you must be so proud of yourself for just getting out there and doing it. I always think you look fantastic myself but the weight loss is fantastic too (especially if it is making you feel better). I’m sure it will be a winning 6-0 soon.
Oh wow – go you! I feel inspired! I always remember I was hopeless at hockey at school, was scared the opponent would bash my ankles with the stick! xx
It’s great being part of a team. Well done for getting out there. I was never any good at hockey, I was always too scared of getting hurt from the sticks. Hope you continue to enjoy it x
It’s great that you’re a part of something that you enjoy so much – and it’s exercise to boot – bonus! Glad that you got your own uniform now and that you feel like a proper member of the team 🙂 #magicmoments

Congrats, go for it! Hockey’s a great game, & it’s in the Olympics isn’t it? 😉
awww thanks, yep it sure is in the Olympics .. I fear my days of hoping to be there are over lol
I’m afraid school hockey left a lasting negative image with me – seeing the teacher accidentally break a girl’s nose and having to trudge out in all weathers to do something I was really bad at means there is no way on earth I would pick up a hockey stick again. So I have great admiration for you and everyone else who plays hockey 🙂 … me I prefer a good fast dog walk!
lol i so remember those days too, although they didnt seem to put me off … even then i must of been mad!
