Breathe new life into your garden: how to get started

Breathe new life into your garden: how to get started The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseWith more time being spent at home, people are turning to their gardens for relaxation, inspiration, and exercise. This means that more people are seeing the value of having a nice garden at their disposal. The result? People who are taking full steam ahead to change their garden into something new. In this article, we will dive into the world of garden redesign and how you can best approach it yourself.

From as-is to to-be garden

Before starting with anything new, you need to understand how your current garden is organized. What are the areas that are now part of the garden? Typically, a garden has a patio and several areas where plants and flowers are located. Try to create a sketch of how the current set-up looks like. This sketch can help to design the to-be state of the garden. When you are sketching the current state, you can also analyze what you like and dislike about the garden. This helps you to come up with new ideas for the target. If drawing is not your thing, not to worry: there are many garden sketcher tools available.

Researching where you want to work towards

Now that you have the design of your current state and its pros and cons in place, it is time to discover where you want to work towards. You can determine this by looking for inspiration on the Internet. Social media websites such as Pinterest and Instagram have lots of examples of what you can do with your garden. It can help to create a mood board of all the items you like, which then should express a certain style (or combination of styles). When you have these styles clear, you can start researching how to create them.

Working towards your favorite styles

Styles often come with principles to take into account. For example, a Japanese Zen garden requires you to combine certain natural elements such as rocks, gravel, moss, and sand. Minimalistic designs often make use of stone and wood, following simple lines and structures. Analyzing these patterns is crucial to creating a coherent garden style.

Adding water to the garden

This is a dream of many gardeners and is often hard to accomplish. Having your pond can create that additional dimension to your garden environment. A pond is suitable with many styles ranging from traditional to modern. What sets the tone is the pond plants you select and the shape of the pond. If you move ahead with a modern pond, you are best suited with a square pond whereas a traditional pond follows a more natural shape.

Having a pond is one thing, but having the right pond plants is another. Selecting these plants, just like other plants in the garden, sets the tone for the style and design you want to express. Therefore, it requires good research to select the plants that are being placed in the pond. Also, take into account the potential maintenance that comes with it.
