Now those of you that have reading for a while do know that I am not the most culinary creative … in fact where cooking is concerned I cock up on a regular basis and its left me an anxious chef and after some burning incidents in my very early twenties I gave up baking altogether.
Having felt slightly uneasy recently about my ‘job’ in the family and feeling anxious that I am not very domesticated on the kitchen front … plus I need to find other things to do in my kitchen except smoke at the back door (now I have quit) I mentioned to my Mum about baking some things I remember as a child.
When Bethany returned from a flying visit to my Mums, she returned with the bible of childhood memories and the most delicious recipes! yep the Be-Ro book!
I feel I was handed a truly magical book, I remember the beautiful cheese straws my Mum baked at Christmas, the tasty biscuits and pastries as if it were yesterday. I felt honoured!
The following Oliver’s shopping trip included some basic baking ingredients, Self Raising flour, Plain flour, caster sugar, butter and even some greaseproof paper!
Last Wednesday evening I decided that it was in for a penny, in for a pound and that I ought to just crack on with making something…
and so shortbread it was…
I weighed, rubbed, kneaded, rolled, cut and greased and got these:
I am still beside myself with pure joy that not only they looked fantastic, but also my husband has declared that they are better then the ones you buy!!
Well with new enthusiasm and a baking ego now the size a small race horse I am already planning my next baking sessions .. yep that’s right I have planned 2 more bakes!
At this rate my beaut of a cooker (double oven, 8 rings) will be now be worth having.
However I do now fear for my waist line ..

Loved this, especially as I still have my mum’s copy one of Be Ro cookbooks too :). And I use it!
lol YAY for the Be-Ro books!!
They do look very very nice. I can imagine them being nicer than the ones you buy 🙂

cant wait to see what you cook when the kitchen is finished x
fantastic! They look very yummy. You can make them with rice flour too if you have any friends who are wheat-intolerant.
can you, thats super handy to know honey as i have one that is!
Nice work Mrs – I find the best technique for enjoying baking but not gobbling down the lot myself is to make sure to give plenty away, just did that yesterday with the cake I baked for my parents’ and aunt’s visit to us… they each went home with a massive great slice… but I did make sure just to leave one little slice each for me the man and the girl!! #MagicMoments
thats a super plan Luci! that way i wont be the size of a house on shortbread!
Again, they look amazing! Go you!!

Fantastic! Well done you honey! I still find myself chuckling to myself about your meat gloves you know?! A culinary magic moment that looks very tasty indeed xx
lol i still chuckle, to be fair meat gloves are my best invention ever! lol xx
Yummy! They look delicious. This was the first recipe book I used when I was little. I still use it now as I think it is one of the best. 🙂
it is now mine forever and i am only baking things from this book or its nothing 🙂
These look so good! You could always cheat with cheese straws – ready made pastry and grated cheese – no one would ever know… unless they looked in the bin lol

Those look so tempting! All the best for your future culinary adventures 😉
awww thanks honey, i only hope they go this well!
