The frost and the chilly winds are starting to take their toll on our faces and hands, but the one place the cold is really starting to affect is our homes. It’s not just the risk of freezing pipes and a ruined roof because of blocked gutters. It’s preparing your living room ready for the colder temperatures. It’s making sure that you don’t forget to put the comforters on all the sofas so that you have a cozy blanket to wrap around yourself when you need it.
We always appreciate the rooms that make us comfortable when the mercury drops, and getting that cozy feeling doesn’t always mean a ton of work or money, either. You may choose to invest in PVCu windows, though, to add that extra layer of protection from the outside world and that’s a bigger investment than adding curtains to the lounge. However, you have to weigh up what would make a good investment to bring the warmth into your house this season. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the ways you can warm up this winter, even inside the home.
Warmer Colours. The right colour palette can change the way that a room feels instantly. In a stark white and light blue room, you’re reminded of cold temperatures and cool days. Adding reds, oranges and bronze tones to your living room can change the way that you feel about it. Metallics add a layer of contrast, which can make the house feel toasty without you even trying. If you don’t want to redecorate, just add those colours in accents and accessories – you won’t regret changing the mood of the room.
Add Layers. Textures walls, layering your rugs, adding cushions and blankets – these are all ways to ensure that you add layers to the room. They add a sense of warmth and dimension, and the more layers you have, the more warmth you trap in a room.
Low Lighting. Using warm lighting is a great way to add some heat to the home. Light shades and warmer light bulbs can change the way that the room is bathed. If you have too much natural light flooding through, hang extra blinds to dim the room and give it that cozy atmosphere that you want. Light bulbs are in varying styles, so you should be able to find bulbs with the right warm hues.
Plug In. Electric blankets are usually meant for beds, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have one in your living room to wrap up in. Pair it with slippers and you won’t be able to lose out on the heat in the room.
It’s cold outside, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be cold inside. You should be able to curl up on the couch and enjoy your evening while the wind and rains batter your newly installed windows. The best thing you can do for yourself for the winter is to make sure your home is a warm cocoon.
