There are several skills in life that mean more to me as a parent than anything else and riding a bike is up there with learning to swim in my book.
Joshua first got his bike for his 4th birthday back in April and has loved it from day one, although only with stabilisers well attached.
He tears from one side of the garden to the other on a daily basis and have loved nothing more than the rides to the shops while Dad tried to catch up on foot.
However just recently he has been asking for us to take the stabilisers off and allow him to ride a ‘big boy bike’ and for the first few requests we kind of ignored it, but not sure why on the following request Ollie took Joshua and his bike to the shed and removed the stabilisers …. just to see.

My little fella firstly put on his helmet, and proceeded to tell his Daddy that it would take lots of practice and that he was probably going to fall off but not to worry as he knew he had to get back up and try again! … to say I was a little bit emotional at overhearing such a lovely moment with his Dad may be a slight understatement!

For the best part of an hour my little man tried, and tried some more.

There were tears and accidents and many smiles but he kept trying.

He still has not mastered the art of riding a bike but what he is mastering is the art of perseverance and I have no doubt he will have the bike riding cracked soon enough but for now I am super proud of how much he wanted this and how much he put into it.

oh bless him, it’s not easy teaching them is it. I remember getting a little hysterical with excitement when my boys learnt to ride theirs! #magicmoments
lol i am so waiting for that moment 🙂
Ah these are really lovely pictures, he certainly looks very determined! A great characteristic! x
he certainly is bless him 🙂
That’s amazing. Boo has had a bike for 2 years and just likes pushing it around with Minnie in the back. She won’t sit on it and I actually think it’s probably too small for her 🙁 someone told me you can hire someone to help so I might look into that #magicmoments
aww bless her! i didnt know you could hire someone how amazing is that!
Go Joshua! I’ll put money on him having mastered it by the end of the week! When kids this age decide to do something they usually do and he clearly wants to. He looks so grown up on his bike there all of a sudden. Lovely photos Jaime and a great way to enjoy some outdoor fun. #MagicMoments
thanks Fiona, we have had rain ever since so hoping to have some dry days to get him back on the bike! lol
Ahh that really is sweet, I love how determined he is!! Santa is bringing my son a bike and I hope he is as confident on it 🙂 Thanks for hosting #magicmoments
aww i am sure he will be utterly thrilled and excited to learn 🙂
good for him for getting back on the bike. I’ve always thought that learning to ride is an underrated milestone. The perseverance it takes really is a good life lesson
i totally agree Jeremy, it would be so easy to quit but i do love to see it when they keep pushing 🙂
Well done on him persevering – middle man doesn’t have this quality!
lol i think he is just stubborn like me Louise lol
How great that he had the confidence to initiate this himself! Super photos too. #magicmoments
aww thanks Catie
Such a great milestone for him to reach! Though he’s got a few more sessions to go before he perfects the art of riding the bike, it’s great that he’s got enough tenacity to try and try again after his falls. It’s a great lesson for anyone out there–don’t quit, keep trying. Your son is the perfect example of it 🙂 Thanks for sharing, Jaime and for hosting us on #magicmoments this week 🙂
aww thanks Maria, he certainly is more than happy to keep on trying 🙂
Aww bless him, I love that he understood it would take time and that he has kept on trying
i think he gets his stubbornness from me! lol
well done on the perseverance Joshua, with a mind set like that it should not be too long until you manage to get going. look forward to the videos. A bike is like every other stage of life, all children are different. Son No2 could ride a 2 wheeler at 3, his sister was nearly 7 before she managed without stabilisers ( though in her defence she did have medical issues)
not sure where his perseverance mine is called stubbornness lol xxxx
OMG when did he get so big? It’s just adorable he wants to try riding without stabilisers, Emmy learnt only recently at just over 5 and a half
lol he really is such a big boy these days! … i think he is just stubborn and thats why he is trying as i am not convinced he is 100% ready but we will see 🙂
We are teaching our son to ride a bike and does take practice to get better X
