Could You Be a Foster Carer?

Could You Be a Foster Carer? The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseIf you are good with children and are looking to support and look after kids, you may be interested in becoming a foster parent. Unlike adopting a child, foster care provides children with a temporary home and you will not become the child’s legal guardian. But this is a brilliant way to support children during times of difficulty and vulnerability, providing them with a safe space to spend time in ongoing care and emotional support. Here’s more information on the subject.

What Is Foster Care?

Some children cannot live with their families. There are many reasons for this. Perhaps their parents are unable to financially provide for them. Maybe their parent is unable to care for them due to issues such as illness, addiction, disability or various other factors. Foster care is a service in which children who cannot live at home are provided with homes with other people.

Could You Be a Foster Carer? The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseFoster care can be when these children are placed in placement settings such as group homes, residential care facilities, emergency shelters and supervised independent living. However, young children do tend to be placed in a “foster home” with “foster parents”. These are substitute parent figures who support the child until they can return home, can be adopted by permanent parents or until they are old enough to take care of themselves independently. Sometimes, foster parents are members of the child’s extended family. But often, foster parents are strangers who previously didn’t know the child or the family.

Foster Care and Pay

Unlike adoption, where you take on a child as your own, foster caring is a societal role for which you will be compensated and receive an income. This will allow you to fully support the child staying with you. The amount you will receive for caring for children can vary depending on how many children you’re looking after and where you are based, so it’s important that you look into how much do foster parents get paid in your location specifically.

What It Takes

Of course, this is a demanding role that isn’t necessarily suited to everybody. You need to make sure that you are well suited to foster care before getting involved. Of course, there is a thorough screening process that will help you to be sure of this once you do get your application rolling. To be a good foster carer you need:

  • Certainty – you need to be 100% sure that you definitely want to be a foster carer and are ready for the challenges that this position can pose.

  • Stability – you need stability in your personal life in order to provide a foster child with a comfortable living environment where they can feel safe and secure.

  • A Good Listener – you need to be able to listen to your foster kids to provide them with the support, care and assistance they may need.

  • Patient – sometimes, foster children come from difficult backgrounds and will have their own issues to face. You will need to practice patience through outbursts and other scenarios.

  • Empathetic – you will need to understand your foster child’s needs, emotions and more. Being empathetic is essential in this position.

As you can see, there’s a lot to think about when it comes to foster care – and this is just an introduction. Hopefully, some of the tips and suggestions above will help you to determine whether this is a path that suits you.
