Fun travel activities your kids will love!

Fun travel activities your kids will love! The Oliver\\\'s Madhouse

So, you’ve booked a family holiday. Maybe it’s a family skiing trip in France, or a fun-filled adventure to Disneyland. Either way, it looks like you’re in for a long-ish trip. How do you make it through without your kids driving you off the deep end? You’ve got to plan ahead and organise some fun travel activities that will keep them occupied for the hours spent sitting down and staying still.

Here are just a few examples of fun travel activities:

iPad or Portable Games Console

iPad’s or portable games consoles can provide hours of entertainment, and give your kid a great distraction if they’re nervous or feeling a bit travel sick. There a tonnes of fun kids apps out there, ranging from silly games to informational and educational apps that will challenge them on a more intellectual level. Just make sure that it’s shared if you have more than one kid, you don’t want an argument breaking out half way through the journey!

The classics; I spy & 20 questions

Nothing beats the classics. We can all remember playing I Spy or 20 questions with our friends or family when we were little, and it really did help the journey go a little bit faster. So, why not get your kids playing these fun games to fill the time (just make sure that they know the rules first, we don’t want any fallings out!). Plus, this is something that the parents can get involved with, too.

Colouring in & Puzzle books

Colouring in books and puzzle books are another great way to pass the time. Colouring in helps to focus a child’s mind while not having to exert too much energy, and is also a very calming activity. Puzzle books on the other hand will get their minds whirring, and will keep their minds active and away from the dullness of a long car or plane ride.

Kids books

Books are not only a great way to pass the time on long journeys, but will also challenge your child’s imagination and their knowledge of words. Depending on what age they are, you can get a number of different books across a wide range of genres. You could go for the classics, including Dr. Seuss and Maurice Sendak, or go for newer picture books by the likes of Ben Mantle or Jeff Kinney.

Travel board games

A lot of well known kids board games come in travel size. Travel sized board games are easier to pack away, usually quick to play so kids don’t lose attention, and are a great way to pass the time. Even board games like Monopoly come in travel sized, which would probably take the journey there and the journey back to complete!

Nap time

This isn’t exactly a fun travel activity, but it’ll probably be necessary. You don’t want to arrive at the other end with cranky, tired kids. So, at some point during the flight or drive, try to get your kids to grab a bit of shut eye.

With just one or a mixture of these activities, you can be somewhat rest assured that your trip won’t be spent with bored kids eager to get up and cause mischief, meaning you’ll arrive at your destination already in the holiday mood.
