I know that by now you and your kids are probably climbing the walls and getting pretty bored of just hanging out at home during the summer. However, with it costing so much for even just a single day out, money can be a big concern. Luckily, I have researched some savvy ideas that can help you do some exciting things with the family, without having to win the lottery. Read on to find out what they are.
Pack your own food.
Taking your own food can prevent you spending on junk items.
One the most significant costs of getting out and about with the family can be feeding everyone for the duration of the trip. After all, everyone will want snacks on the journey there and back, as well as a meal or two each day, and that doesn’t even include breakfast!
Of course, you can seriously reduce this cost if you pack your own lunches, and snacks, or even go self-catering for longer trips. Yes, I know its a little more work, usually for mums, but if it makes the difference between being able to get out and experience something new with the kids, and staying home and watching Peppa Pig for the 40th time, it’s worth it!
Stay local.
Next, if you are looking to get out more, but concerned about the cost, remember that you don’t have to go far to have fun necessarily. In fact, there are usually some great places on your doorstep that you haven’t tried out yet like farms, theme parks, riding stables, and shows.
A family farm is the perfect low cat activity for the kids.
Of course, by staying local, it means that you can cut costs because you won’t have to pay out as much for public transport or petrol. Also staying local means, you can eat most of your meals at home so you won’t have to provide so much grub for everyone either.
Hunt for deals.
Another savvy strategy to use when you are trying to save money on family outings, and even for longer breaks and holidays is to use discount codes.
Sometimes you can get these from making a previous purchase, but even if you haven’t you can get plenty of voucher codes online that will help you to save a significant amount on the cost of your trip. In fact, once you have seen the discount they can unlock for you, you will probably never shop for this sort of thing again without checking the voucher codes first. After all, why pay more than you have to?
Look for free activities.
Also, don’t forget that a lot of local councils and organisations put on free activities for kids over the summer. Many of which are great ways of getting them out of the house, and out from under your feet, without having to part with a fortune.
In particular, look out for things like local carnivals and fairs which can be lots of fun with parades and floats, as well as stalls including games, and homemade wares to buy too.
There are also fun activities like fake beaches being installed in town centres all over the country now, which mean you can grab a deckchair, and the kids can make sandcastles all without the cost of having to travel to the coats. Something that is often very welcome for folks that live in landlocked parts of the country.
Lastly, when it comes to free activities, there may be classes on offer at local museums and galleries that will help the kids learn a new skill such as painting, archaeology, or biology. Places are often limited though, so it’s best to try and sign them up before the start of the summer to guarantee a spot and some time where you don’t have to be on mummy duty as well.
Visit friends.
Last of all, when it comes to saving money but still having fun in the summer, remember that it’s entirely possible to entertain the kids and get them out of the house by visiting friends.
Of course, friends and family member that have kids of around the same age are always the best choice, because they will have plenty of toys and interests to share. The kids may even, if you are lucky, entertain each other while you can’t sit and catch up with the grown-ups.
Just make sure to reciprocate as well, with you visiting a friend and the next time them coming to you to keep things fair. Then you should have plenty of low-cost outings to keep everyone amused during those long summer weeks.
