Hard And Taboo Topics We Cover As Parents

Hard And Taboo Topics We Cover As Parents The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseAs a parent to two young boys I am yet to cover any of the hard subjects which I will inevitably be asked by them in the years to come.

They are both so young and innocent and I would dearly love to keep them at this stage, in this bubble and stop the world but I’m not naïve and I do know this isn’t possible so I want to be the one to have the hard conversations with them no matter how difficult they may be.

After all there  shouldn’t be any taboo subjects between parents and their children.

Where do babies come from? Relationships, love and even death should all be covered by families and not left to schools to teach our children.

I may however pass a few of the ‘male type questions’ over to Ollie to deal with such as erections and such like, after all he is far more equipped to deal with those questions than I am!

This infographic by Which? shows some of the trickiest subjects to discuss with family and friends.

I do think that these subjects could be hard to discuss depending on who you are discussing them with, I would find it harder to talk about them at a young age with an older relative than I would talk to someone of a similar age to myself.

I clearly remember the uncomfortable school sex education classes and would much rather have the talk with the boys before they too have to go through these classes for themselves.

Another talk Ollie and I have been having between ourselves recently came up due to my recent operation, that is wills. It’s actually not something we have gotten around to yet but that fear in the back of my mind has made me realise that it is something we should be adding onto our to-do-lists for the near future, Many of us will find the subject of writing a will difficult to discuss so this is probably why it hasn’t been one of our priorities yet – it just seems so grown up and a little final if truth be told.

Do you have a will yet?

We have already started talking to our seven year old son about some things such as death (as he lost his karate teacher recently) , finances and how babies are made but we keep it low key so not overwhelm him.
