How Can You Make Your Home Truly Stand Out?

How Can You Make Your Home Truly Stand Out? The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseIf there’s one thing that’s more important than anything else when you’re choosing how to decorate and design your home it should be how much personality you can bring to it.

We all know that strange feeling when you walk into someone’s home and just feel… nothing. It’s as though there simply isn’t any life in the entire place. A lot of the time this ends up happening because the home simply doesn’t have anything to set it apart from any other. It ends up feeling more like a showroom than a home where people live and make memories. Not only does this make a difference when it comes to guests coming to your home but it also means that your home will feel like a far less pleasant and comfortable place to live.

How Can You Make Your Home Truly Stand Out? The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseAfter all, if you’re going to be spending the vast majority of your time somewhere, you want to be sure that it’s the best possible place for you and your family. The best way to bring some personality into your home is to turn the whole thing into a reflection of who you are. Use your home to show off your own personality, and you’ll be able to turn it into somewhere unique. Luckily, doing that isn’t nearly as complicated as you might think! Here are some easy things that you can do to bring your personality into your home.

Show off your interests

Each and every one of us has interests and passions that define us. Whatever you’re into, it should be something that you’re proud of and are willing to show off to the world. The great thing is, there are plenty of ways that you can turn your interests into some fantastic, creative design choices. You could make a bookcase filled with your favourite authors into the centrepiece of your living room, or you could cover the walls in artwork and framed posters from your favourite movies or TV shows.

You might even want to go one step beyond that and find something like personalised wall stickers that show off some element of yours or your family’s personality. After all, there’s really nothing quite like being able to have something in your home that no one is going to be able to see anywhere else. The great thing is, it’s your home, so there’s no one who can tell you whether or not your choices are right or wrong. As long as it reflects who you are, then go for it!

Display your memories

What’s more, personal that your own memories and experiences? Nothing brings life and personality into a home faster than collections of pictures of friends and loved ones. Not only does it provide you with a great way to decorate your home but it also lets you hold onto and enjoy those precious memories as much as possible.

When you have kids, you could even frame their drawings and display them throughout the house as well to show them how much they mean to you. The best thing about using your personality and memories to decorate your home and give it some personal charm is that it’s actually one of the easiest things that you can possibly do. After all, finding some pictures of you and your family that you really love, framing them on the wall for everyone to see can make a huge difference to how your home looks and feels, but it’s hardly going to take that much time and effort to do.

Go unique

There are few things that can make a home seem totally generic then having the same furniture or decorations as everyone else.

The rise of chain homeware stores has meant that far too many of us simply end up with the same stuff, leaving our homes looking totally interchangeable. If you want to avoid this, then go the extra mile and find places that sell unique and interesting decoration ideas.

There are plenty of places online that do this and, if you make a trip to your local town or city, you’re pretty likely to find some smaller stores that sell things that you’d never be able to find anywhere else. Not only are these kinds of things likely to be utterly unlike anything else on the market. There’s a good chance that you’ll stumble across something that you never would have otherwise noticed but that would be a perfect addition to your home.

A feature wall

A feature wall is an amazing addition to any home, not just because it’s so bold and distinct, but because it’s just so easy to achieve. There are plenty of ways to create a feature wall, but the most common is to paint it a different color to the rest of the room. If, say, a room is painted white or magnolia, then why not embrace a bold, dark color for the feature wall.

You could also use wallpaper to use some intense patterns as well. Of course, if you find yourself in a position where you either don’t want to use bold solid colors or you don’t feel like it’s something that your home would be able to stand up to, the other method of creating a feature wall is to take one wall and absolutely cover it in pictures. Whether they’re photos of family and friends, pieces of art, or anything else you might want to hang up, this can not only offer you the chance to make your home a little more personal, but it also makes a serious statement when people first walk in.

A lot of the time it’s easy to feel like this kind of wall might end up being a little bit overboard in terms of the kind of impact that it can have on your home. However, the truth is that, as long as you’re only really limiting it to one area of your home, it can often be a wonderful addition that brings new life into your home without making the place feel overly cluttered. The key to any home is always balance, so just be sure not to tip the scales too far in one direction or the other.

A key piece of furniture

One of the best ways to make any room feel a little more distinct is to give it a focal point. The best focal point for most rooms is generally a piece of furniture. With most people getting their furniture from places like IKEA, having something like a solid oak table in the middle of a room is sure to make a pretty strong statement. Sure, a piece of large furniture like this might be more expensive than your other decor, but they often last for so long that it’s closer to an investment than a standard purchase.

The best thing about any kind of featured piece of furniture is that it not only acts as an amazing conversation piece that will bring an extra touch of class to just about any room, but it has the added benefit of practicality. After all, one of the biggest issues that a lot of people run into is that, in decorating their home, they end up focusing purely on the aesthetic side of things. In doing so, they fail to pay close enough attention to the kinds of practical things that can not only make your home a more convenient place but a more comfortable and pleasant place to spend your time in general.

The right piece of furniture can perfectly walk the line between form and function and bring a whole new dimension to just about any room in your home.

Of course, one thing that you need to be careful about it that you don’t go overboard. It’s incredibly easy to feel as though your home is boring simply because you spend all of your time in it. This can cause you to miss all of the little details that actually make your home incredibly unique and distinct. If you spend all of your time constantly trying to bring that sense into your home, then there’s a chance that you could end up going too far and making it feel cluttered and overly busy.

Try to take a step back and look at your home from a totally objective viewpoint whenever you start to feel like you want to change something about it.

This is also an incredibly positive thing to do if you find yourself in a position where you’re thinking about moving home. After all, if you spend all of your time in one place, it’s not uncommon for it to lose a certain amount of its charm.

This leads a lot of people to assume that moving on is the only option. However, by trying to make your home more personal and bring more charm to it, you can not only make it a more exciting place but you can also remind yourself of what it was that made you fall in love with it in the first place.
