How To Support A Childs School Learning

Over the last 12 months I can honestly say there has been so much growth happening for my little guy and not just on the height front either! 

From his journey from private day nursery to his reception year Joshua has really come on in leaps and bounds but as a parent I obviously want to do my best to support him wherever and however I can but it’s not easy. 

I have no experience of teaching in the classic meaning of the teaching, yes I taught my son the basics in life, manners, compassion, understanding and respect. I have also helped him develop his own understanding of what is specked of him, all great things but when it comes to the formal ‘teaching’ I like many others am lost as sea. 

What exactly do Key Stages mean? How do they affect things for my son? Where should he actually be on the school curriculum. It really is very complex for me on the outside looking in. 

At the end of the school year Joshua had throughly flourished and had exceed several areas of learning well into the stage above. Which is amazing but even though he is fantastic in a couple of key areas there are some he is just under average in and though I am not fazed I obviously want to do all I can from home to help support him. 

Recently I was made aware of a company called Education Quizzes that have been set up to do just what I am looking for.  The sites primary objective is to help children to be successful at school with easy and enjoyable quizzes based on the KS1, KS2, 11-Plus, KS3 and GCSE curriculum that have all been written by teachers! 

Although a site like this is offers something super useful I have been put off in the past as we only want to dip in and out of supporting him at the moment as he is on a par with his learning. Don’t get me wrong if he was struggling and needed a little extra support this makes for an ideal avenue. But since the subscription is £9.95 a month it is not for everyone.

I have found online resources can be free to use if you put the time and effort into searching for them. It is also super helpful to have an idea on how your child learns too. Some children are visual learners and others are physical, verbal or even logical learners so looking at your own child to find out what works best for them is crucial so you can search out the content you need.

Personally I love the concept and it would work brilliantly within so many different care settings from childminders, pre school nurseries and even schools themselves as it makes learning fun and I for one know my child learns more when its fun.
