Utilising the wall space can be a really great way to transform a room and make it feel so much more special. If you’re not too sure what to do with the wall space, I’ve put together a list of a few ideas to get you inspired.
Don’t be afraid to get creative
Look around for ideas of wall murals that other parents have done to get a good idea about what you want to achieve in the room.
You could paint something simple yet pretty and effective onto the wall. Like a tree or a quote, or go for something more elaborate like an animal or a whole scene.
If all else fails you can buy transfers that can do this for you like I did for Joshua’s room.
Work with colours that are found in the room’s soft furnishings. By using the fabric of the curtains or the duvet covers and rugs it will tie it together. These can also be replaced cheaply online. So if they do need refreshing to fit the new art, and it shouldn’t be too much of a mammoth task.
Make a collage display that’s personal to them
Why not let the child’s work do the talking? Make a collage display of all of their favourite drawings and masterpieces. If there is a place to showcase their efforts you won’t have to fork out for new, expensive, colourful pieces.
You could even frame some of their favourite pieces. Which will look quirky but will also put a gigantic smile of pride on their face, especially when you have people over and they get to show off what they’ve done! I love this example from Pinterest.
Utilise things they love for extra brownie points
The best way to make them fall in love with your efforts is to really make it about something that they love. This could involve using photos, prints or quotes of things like their favourite films or books and blowing them up really big on the wall. You can get a bit artsy here too with acrylic picture frames displaying posters of characters from TV shows or films. A very small child will like seeing these posters on the wall, but they’re also subtle enough that an older child will continue liking them as they grow up!
Make it an interactive experience for them
Another great idea is to make the wall an extension of their play area, and let them add things/draw on/play with the walls!
There are lots of things you can do to achieve this. Creating a whiteboard or blackboard wall they are free to draw on. Installing LEGO pieces on the wall that they can play with. And installing magnetic boards on the walls so they can add things to it with magnets are super ideas. I wish I had done this for my little ones it would have saved many cover up jobs!
All these idea can help design a new and interactive room for a child.
