We all want to keep warm during those cold winter months and it can be so hard to find that guide to ideal room temperature for the whole family. If it is just us adults, we can just slip on a jumper or a hoodie to get a little warmer but when you have children in the household, you want to make sure the home itself is as toasty as toasty can be – without being a sauna! How can you keep yourself warm in winter – and why should you ensure that your home is at the right temperature?
You want to keep damp at bay and keep yourself healthy
Having the temperature too hot or too cold can be detrimental to both your house and your own health and that of your family. The weather during the winter season can be incredibly tumultous – one day it can be extremely windy, another with torrential rain, another with snow. Temperatures can vary dramatically so it is important to get the balance right inside your home at least. For health and wellbeing, the minimum recommended temperature is 18°C with the optimum ebing between 18°C and 21°C. Depending on the age and/or health of your family (infants, elderly, the sick), minimum temperatures of 20°C or 21°C may be required. You should never have them lower than 18°C or higher than 24°C as this could be a health risk.
Use a thermostat
A thermostat is a great way to control the temperature in your home. It will measure how warm your home is and will switch the heating on if the temperature falls below a certain amount. You can even use the timer to programme it to come on at certain times – some choose for it to go on for a little while in the middle of the night when it can get bitterly cold and for a little bit in the morning when you are getting up or in the evening when you are going to bed.
There are even smart thermostats now which you can control from an app on your phone. You can still set timers but if you forget, you can access it and turn your heating on whilst out of the house – so you can come back to a nice and toasty warm home!
By using a thermostat, you can also save on your energy bills. It can be so tempting to leave the heating on constantly, whether you need to or not – and this can be so incredibly detrimental to your energy bills – you will be paying for that privilege. The thermostat ensures you are only using the heating when you absolutely have to.
Wrap up
If you are reluctant to turn on your heating at certain points of the day, wrap up! Use a jumper, a hoodie or chill out on the sofa under the blanket – you can get super cosy! Obviously, this isn’t always possible with young children so only consider this if it is just you or older children in the house.
Utilise your home fire
Some people don’t have open fires in their house but some people are lucky to – and it can be lovely to sit together in the living room with the fire burning and keeping you all toasty and warm. It really epitomises winter.
How are you keeping your home warm this winter? Have you put your heating on yet?
