Proud Pumpkin Picking

Proud Pumpkin Picking The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseThis year after missing the strawberry picking season I was certain that for the first time ever I would get to take Joshua pumpkin picking.

For me its important to teach Joshua about the foods that we eat and that food is grown and not just discovered  in Tesco!

With previous years Joshua has had pre bought pumpkins from a shop and has throughly loved cutting them up with Daddy to make some lanterns while Daddy made soup afterwards so building on what was already a tradition really appealed to me.

On hearing that the Maxey’s Farm Shop a few villages over was open for pumpkin picking Joshua and I headed there last weekend to carefully select a pumpkin or 2!

On arriving early on the Sunday the field really was a sight to be seen with bright orange speckled all over and with excitement levels on a high from Joshua he selected his own wheelbarrow and was off on his selection mission!

Joshua decided that he needed 4 pumpkins 1 medium, 2 small and one baby one but the selection process was a tough one and 20+ were discounted when I pointed them out so I gave up and let him scout about looking!

He did decided that the illusive baby pumpkin was no longer worth searching for after 35 minutes but after accessing his 3 picked pumpkins on the way to pay he discovered a tiny baby pumpkin that fitted the bill so with 4 ‘perfect’ pumpkins we may our way to pay and Joshua filled me in on the faces he was going to create on  these fine specimens  of pumpkin he had very proudly picked!

And after carefully negotiating the rows in the mud with this wheelbarrow he proudly showed the staff his lovely pumpkins while we paid and then proceeded to tell me all the way home in the car about each pumpkin he had seen and disliked and why.

I think this will certainly make it into our traditions, as he throughly enjoyed it and in fairness so did I, it was nice to encourage him into seeing where food comes from and being able to encourage him being out int the fresh air too.

Now its down to Daddy to carve and cook Joshua’s proudly picked pumpkins!
