Should You Stay or Should You Go? Here’s How to Decide

Should You Stay or Should You Go? Here's How to Decide The Oliver\\\'s Madhouse

When it comes to our homes, it’s always really important to make sure we are in the right space. After all, we spend such a large portion of our time in our houses, so they need to feel right. Not only do we need to have enough space and to ensure that they are decorated in a way that allows us to feel safe, secure, and relaxed, but we also need to be in an area that is suited to us too. If you have a family and you have children in particular, you may also want to ensure you’re near good schools and local amenities and facilities for them to use.

When this is the case, you may find that you are often torn between the idea of staying in your current home or moving to a new house. It can be really hard to make the decision between them both, but in this blog post, we’re going to explore a few questions that should help you decide whether you should stay or move.

Are You Happy Where You Are?

First of all, it’s always a good idea to begin by asking yourself if you’re happy with where you are. If the answer is yes, it may be that you just need to make some tweaks to your current home or the design in order for you to be fully happy. But if you’re not, then it’s important for you to start thinking about whether or not moving could be the better solution.

Do You Have Enough Space?

One of the biggest questions that can influence your decision here is for you to work out if you have enough space. If you have already outgrown your home or your family is growing and you know that you will run out of space eventually, thinking about moving could be the most logical solution here.

Are You in a Location You Like?

Another really important question to ask yourself is whether or not you like where you are. When it comes to the idea of being happy with where you live, choosing the location is a huge part of that. If you really don’t like where you are, then it’s often a big indication that moving is right for you. However, you do need to ensure that you begin your research to find a location that you do want to live in!

Could You Adapt Your Current Home?

If you really like where you are and there are things you love about your home, you may also want to consider adapting where you are in order to stay there. This is where the idea of doing a home extension may come in. If you have the space and you think you’ll be able to get the planning permission for it, it could end up being the best solution for you.

What’s the Cost Difference?

You also need to take a look at the cost. Of course, if you’re extending or renovating your current home, that will come with a price tag. But at the same time, moving comes with selling fees, purchase taxes, legal costs, and moving costs, so it’s important to think through each option carefully and work out what you can realistically afford.

Are You Prepared for the Process?

From here, you also need to make sure that you’re fully prepared for the process. A lot goes into moving, and it’s key that you’re able to focus on everything you need to do in order to get it underway. Not only do you need to prepare to pack, but you also need to find a moving company to help you with the move. You’ll also want to understand both the sale and purchase process, along with how long everything takes. That way, you can be as prepared as possible.

Do You Know What You’re Looking For?

At the same time, it’s also really important to make sure that you know what you’re looking for in a new house. After all, moving can be such a stressful, time-consuming, and expensive process, it’s really important for you to get it right. Making sure that you have a checklist of what you’re looking for can really make a difference here. That way, you can be certain of the right house whenever you find it.

Do You Want to Move?

Then, of course, there’s also the very relevant idea of actually asking yourself whether you want to move! Sometimes, the immediate answer will be yes. But if you have any kind of attachment to your home, it may be harder for you to move on. Keeping this in mind is always going to be important and could influence your final decision.

Are You Ready for Another Renovation?

It’s also important to note that you may also want to consider whether or not you’re ready to carry out another renovation. It may be the case that you’re buying a readily-made home or something just built on a brand new development. When that’s the case, your turn-key property will be ready to move into. However, if you are buying an older home, you need to be aware of the renovation process and be sure that you’re ready to get started on it again. After it, it can take a lot of time, be stressful, and cost a lot!

What Feels Like the Right Thing to Do?

Ultimately, what it comes down to, is you knowing which option feels like the right thing to do. If you’re still undecided, it may be the case that you need to sit on the decision for a little while. However, if you know in your gut that you tend to be leaning one way or the other, that could be a huge indicator for you. Worse case scenario, you can even create a pro-con list and see which option comes out on top logically. That way, you’ve dedicated the time to figuring it all out, and you know what the right decision to make really is!
