Joshua has been asking for us to extend our family for a few years now, we tried out best with Jacob but his younger brother was not enough.
It’s taken a long time for me to relent and think seriously about it all but recently we were put in a position where we really needed to make that judgment fairly swiftly.
These things often catch you off guard don’t they but after asking for money for his recent birthday he wanted to save money for somethings special and after receiving £170 for his birthday from his amazingly generous family he finally announced he wanted a pet and we know that Pets can be a great experiance to a household.
Now only being 7 I wouldn’t have given it much consideration normally but this is not something that has been a whim, it’s been mentioned before but this time Joshua offered up the whole £170 to buy everything he would need for either a rabbit or some guinea pigs.
So, Ollie and I had a chat that evening and we decided we would head to our local Pets At Home store to get him chatting to the staff and to ask them to tell him what would be expected of him if he took on this responsibility.
Thankfully a lovely lady in store had some free time to chat to him about his options and what both guinea pigs and rabbits needed every day and this only made him more determined. Once home we told him that if he wanted a pet he would have to use all of his money to buy a hutch and the things that the pet would need along with the pet. Again, it didn’t phase him so after a quick phone call to his Effie (grandma) to see if she might be in a position to feed and water any pet when we go away on holidays. Ollie and I decided that we would allow him to get a pair of guinea pigs.
This week we have taken delivery of the new hutch and put it together and ready for Saturday. After Ollie got home from work we headed back to Pets At Home to take a look at some guinea pig babies!
Now choosing was no mean feat since there were 3 lots of pairs to pick from. Joshua was determined that they needed to be boys and we said they had to be short haired. Jacob thought they were hilarious in the glass cages running and jumping around. After telling him that banging on the glass was a no go we realised we would have to watch him like a hawk in the garden as he obviously was going to be obsessed with them.
The first pair we looked at had one that was white with pink eyes and Ollie vetoed that one straight off. Next we were shown the remaining 4 that we could pick 2 from and he settled on 2 black ones, one with white markings and then one with flecks of ginger running through him. So we purchased everything a guinea pig would ever require with a bowl, water bottle, vitamin c drops, guinea pig food, saw dust, straw, hey, a stick bridge, plastic bed hut and some toys to chew on. They are obviously very lucky guinea pigs. With all his birthday money spent, along with some of our money we headed home to set up the hutch and get ‘Mario & Luigi’ set up in their new hutch.
So there we have it, 2 brand new members of The Oliver’s Household, with adventures ahead I am sure these little fellas are going to feel right at home in no time at all.
