We had noticed that Jacob had been showing signs of knowing what he was doing when having a wee and we knew he could hold his wee when he wanted to so with around 7 others in his Tweenies group at nursery all starting on the potty-training journey we jumped on the band waggon too after he asked for a potty one day.
The first couple of weeks we took it really slowly and let him take the lead with us gradually asking if he wanted it regularly throughout the day and had great success with a really happy toddler and even happier parents when he decided to use his potty.
After a couple of weeks, we decided in the all or nothing approach. I blocked off almost a week’s worth of outings and battened down the hatches at home with him, a stack of pants, a couple of potties and lots and lots of wipes! … However, I have to say we haven’t really needed as many as we thought.
The first week there were 2-3 accidents a day but they got less as the week went on and after 2 weeks we were actually only getting wet clothing when he didn’t aim his spout into the potty.
We thought our recent camping trip might have scuppered him as for long car journeys or full days out we have reverted back to a pull up. However, we have been steadfast at making sure he uses the toilet while we are out so he knows the expectation is that even in the pull up he needs to use the potty/toilet and he even surprised us with no regression and he was eager to please so has continued to want to use the potty.
Last week the only accidents we have had have been when he has been too eager to have a wee that he has not been pointing it into the potty and the first little bit has wet his pants and shorts. However, he is now starting to push it down when he wees so we are experiencing less pee accidents in general.
I honestly had dreaded the potty-training stage; however, Jacob has almost decided for himself he wanted out of nappies so it has made it exceptionally easy so far.
I think it has made me realise that potty training really is something that is going to work when the toddler is fully ready, something I don’t think I had appreciated with Joshua.
So far with it going so well I am waiting for the catch and it all to come crashing down on us .. cross your fingers for us that it doesn’t!
