Top Moving Hacks Inspired by Professional Organisers

Top Moving Hacks Inspired by Professional Organisers The Oliver\\\'s Madhouse

Moving doesn’t have to feel like total chaos. While it’s true that packing up your life and starting fresh can be a bit stressful, there are ways to make it easier, especially if you borrow a few tricks from the people who do it best. Professional organisers know how to turn even the messiest move into something a bit more manageable.

With the right systems in place and a few simple tools, packing, transporting, and unpacking everything can actually feel kind of satisfying. So here’s a list of moving hacks inspired by professional organisers to help make your move go smoother from start to finish.

Start early and plan like it’s a project

One of the most common mistakes people make when moving is underestimating how long everything takes. Packing always seems like something you’ll get to later until you find yourself throwing random things in boxes the night before the move.

Professional organisers always build in more time than they think they’ll need. That means scheduling specific days to handle different rooms, making a checklist, and actually blocking time out on a calendar. It might sound overly organised, but when things get hectic, having a plan makes it easier to stay on track.

Try colour coding to help you stay organised

This tip is one of those simple but brilliant ideas that really pays off on moving day. Instead of writing long descriptions on each box, try colour coding your moving boxes by room. You can use stickers, markers, or even coloured tape–it doesn’t matter what method, as long as it’s consistent.

It makes unloading so much easier because you can see at a glance where each box should go. No one’s standing around reading labels or asking questions. Plus, if you’re hiring help or getting friends involved, the visual system means less explaining and more progress.

Some people also find it helpful to keep a colour-coded list of contents, either on paper or on their phone, so they can quickly find things they need during the first few days. Having a few priority boxes marked in a bold colour can make it easy to locate kitchen basics, cleaning supplies, or bedding when everything else is still in boxes.

Use self-storage to your advantage

Sometimes the biggest stress around moving comes from having to do everything at once. That’s where exploring different self storage options can make a real difference, especially if you’re dealing with awkward timing between places or just want to take the pressure off.

Putting seasonal items or less-used belongings in storage for a few weeks can help clear space and give you breathing room. It also makes unpacking easier because you’re not buried under everything all at once. Many people find it helpful for staging their home before selling, too.

Give every item a destination

Professional organisers live by the idea that every item should have a home, even during a move. Before you start boxing everything up, it helps to think about where things will go in the new space. If you’re downsizing, be honest about what will realistically fit.

Taking the time to sort things before you pack also means you’re not bringing clutter into your new home. It’s a good chance to donate, recycle, or throw out stuff you don’t need anymore. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re unpacking into a space that feels more intentional.

It also makes unpacking quicker and less stressful because you’ve already made decisions ahead of time. Labelling boxes with both the room and what’s inside (briefly) helps speed things up, and you’ll avoid that frustrating feeling of opening five boxes to find one thing. Planning out storage in advance like where bins, drawers, or shelves will go can also help things land in the right place straight away.

Don’t be afraid to consider a moving service

If you’re short on time or just don’t want to deal with the physical part of moving, consider a moving service. It might seem like a luxury, but in many cases, the time and energy you save are well worth the cost] especially if you’re juggling work, family, or a tight schedule.

Some services even offer partial moves, like handling just the heavy lifting or providing packing help. You don’t have to hand over the entire job to make it useful. The goal is to reduce your workload and make the experience a bit less overwhelming.

Use smart moving hacks to stay organised

There are so many little tricks that professional organisers swear by during a move. One simple one is to pack a box with things like chargers, toiletries, snacks, and a change of clothes. That way, you’re not digging through every box looking for your toothbrush after a long day.

Another great one: take photos of how things are connected before you unplug electronics. Label cords with masking tape so the setup is easier later. These moving hacks seem small in the moment, but they make a big difference when you’re exhausted and trying to settle in quickly.

Keep the bigger picture in mind

Everyone wants to make a move go smoothly, but sometimes things still get a bit chaotic. Boxes might go missing, the weather might be awful, or your timeline might shift. That’s why flexibility and mindset play a big role in how you experience the move.

Try to focus on progress, not perfection. Keep the most important things accessible, communicate clearly with everyone helping, and don’t forget to take breaks. At the end of the day, the goal is to get to your new place in one piece and ideally, with a bit of your sanity intact.

It also helps to remind yourself why you’re moving in the first place–whether it’s a fresh start, more space, a better location, or something totally new. When things feel hectic, keeping that bigger reason in mind makes the hiccups feel a bit less frustrating and the whole process more meaningful.

A little bit of planning goes a long way when you’re moving, and borrowing ideas from professional organisers can seriously change how you feel about the whole process. With smart hacks, storage support, and maybe even some outside help, your next move doesn’t have to be a mess.
