As a parent, it’s natural to want to give your children the best possible chances in life, and to avoid any problems with their development. It’s the most rewarding job in the world, especially when you get it right. But there’s quite a lot of controversy about how to do it right – in fact, there are probably as many opinions about the right approach as there are parents.
Of course, as parents, we have a unique insight into the tastes and needs of our own children, and a unique perspective on how to provide for them. With that said, there are a few practices that just about everyone agrees are beneficial.
Parenting practices
One of the most widely used and effective parenting techniques is the idea that parents should praise effort rather than attainment. So, rather than telling your child that they’re clever, you might say that they must have worked really hard in order to achieve a particular outcome. This prevents children from viewing mistakes as failures; it makes them less worried about being judged for their attainment; and, finally, it allows them to investigate their failures without feeling bad about themselves.
Avoid using shoes
Children (and human beings in general) have adapted to be able to walk around barefoot. This allows them to develop a sense of balance and work out how to use their legs at a quicker pace. It’ll also mean improved blood flow, fewer aches and pains, and therefore a better mood. Of course, sometimes the ground underfoot isn’t quite right for walking barefoot. In these instances, barefoot shoes will allow your child to enjoy the best of both worlds: barefoot walking, but still with protected feet.
Less screen-time

Prolonged screen time has a negative effect on quality of sleep, which can have knock-on effects on your child’s mood and behaviour. On the other hand, children do need some controlled exposure to screens if they’re going to be able to survive in the digital world. Impose limits and stick to them, in the same way you would for unhealthy snack foods.
Healthy lifestyle
Your children need to be able to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, which means paying attention to their diet and exercise. Ideally, you’ll educate them on how to prepare a balanced meal and maintain a healthy lifestyle, so that they can develop good habits for later in life. By the same token, you might introduce them to a type of sport that they’ll enjoy, and that will help them to develop social skills.
Keeping children away from tobacco smoke, sickness, and arguments is also beneficial. If your relationship with your spouse could use some work, then the effort to repair it will benefit your child’s development.
