What To Do If You Can’t Conceive

What To Do If You Can’t Conceive The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseMany couples struggle to conceive a child. If you have been trying for a baby but have had no luck, there are many potential solutions that you can explore to improve your chances of conceiving. This post details some of the steps you should take when trying to have a baby.

Track your ovulation cycle

Tracking your ovulation cycle using a calendar or app can help you determine when you are most fertile so that you can try for a baby on these days. The average menstrual cycle is 28 days and days 12, 13 and 14 are generally the most fertile days. Bear this in mind when trying to conceive.

Don’t have a regular ovulation cycle? This could be a reason why you are struggling to conceive and could be worth seeing a doctor about (more about this later).

Make healthy lifestyle changes

Healthy lifestyle changes could potentially boost your fertility. This includes maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, not drinking alcohol, quitting smoking and trying to reduce stress.

Making these lifestyle changes – even if they are only temporary while you conceive – could help to boost sperm quality and egg quality, increasing the chances of falling pregnant. Obviously, you will need to maintain certain healthy lifestyle habits when pregnant to ensure that you carry the baby full-term.

If the above measures do not help you to fall pregnant, it could be time that you see a doctor. Most doctors recommend booking an appointment after a year of trying. If you are a woman over 36, you may want to consider seeing a doctor sooner.

A doctor will be able to arrange various tests to help determine if specific treatment is needed. For example, tests may reveal that you have fibroids, which may be removable via medication or a myomectomy. Hormone imbalances may meanwhile be treatable with hormone therapy.

Explore fertility treatment options

There are many fertility treatment options that you can explore once you’ve seen a doctor. At first, it may be recommended that you try fertility medication. If this does not work, a doctor will then discuss various procedure options. This includes IVF, IUI, egg donation and even embryo donation.

Fertility treatment procedures are generally not cheap. Many couples need several rounds of treatment, which can make the whole thing even more expensive. Make sure that you explore funding options. If you are over 40, you should try to arrange fertility treatment as soon as you can to increase its chances of being successful.

Consider adoption

Even after fertility treatment, some couples do not fall pregnant or cannot carry the baby. There may come a point when you have to accept that you cannot give birth to a child naturally. However, adoption may still be an option if you are eager to be a parent.

The adoption process requires meeting eligibility requirements and carrying out an assessment. After this, you can join the waiting list of parents wanting to adopt. Many couples find this to be much straightforward and affordable than fertility treatment.
