8 Cyber Security Essentials Every Family Needs To Know

8 Cyber Security Essentials Every Family Needs To Know The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseKeeping your family safe isn’t just about road safety and stranger danger in the real world. Nowadays we also need to make sure that everyone in the family is safe online as well. Unfortunately, this can seem like a confusing and overwhelming task, especially if we don’t see ourselves as tech-savvy. The good news is that you can find some of the most helpful cybersecurity suggestions for the whole family below.

Choose strong passwords

It may sound simple, but ensuring that all online accounts are protected by strong passwords is a must to defend from hacking. A strong password contains both upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Many platforms like Google make it even easier to keep all your log-ins and passwords secure as they store them for you safely.

Regularly update your software

New vulnerabilities in software are being identified with those that have nefarious intentions all the time. That is why it’s so important to make sure that you regularly update your software as soon as it becomes available. This is because software updates contain security patches that will fix these vulnerabilities and ensure that any software you are using as a family is as safe as possible.

Keep your data backed up

Another great thing you can do to ensure the whole family stays safe online is to back up your data regularly. This means instead of only storing things online such as documents and photos you may manually backup and store them on hard drives or memory sticks. Then if the worst happens and your content is lost online, you will still have most of it and won’t lose all those precious memories.

Use multi-factor authentication

Multifactor authentication is another helpful way to ensure your family’s safety online. Multi Factor authentication relies on an authentic message being sent to a separate device before an account can be accessed. In some cases, it will ask for a code, or for you to log into a specific app to demonstrate that it’s you asking for permission. This is valuable because it means that no one can gain access to that account without also having access to that second device, which makes hacking much less likely.

Regularly check their browsing history

If you want your family to safely use the internet, then regularly checking their history is a very good idea. This is because it will give you a good idea of what they are using it for and searching for, and whether you need to intervene or not. Some parents even go so far as to have dual access to their kids’ social media accounts which allows them to check who they are making friends with and talking about.

Disable geolocation services

To ensure safety when using the internet it’s also a good idea to disable geolocation services. This is because it can expose your location data to those you do not want to have it, meaning both companies and individuals can track and find you.

You can switch off location services on many platforms like Chrome, but for additional security finding out how to change iPhone ip address can be helpful. Then you can protect your city, zip code, and area code data from bother advertisers and malicious parties.

Use parental controls

Many parents forget that they can be in control of what their children can access and do online. The most simple way to do this is to make sure you set proper parental control over what they can and cannot access. It’s also a good idea to limit the amount of time they spend online and put restrictions on other aspects of their tech use such as not being able to run up speakers or headphones past a certain level. Lastly, be sure to add restrictions to what they can buy online too. One way to do this is to enforce a limit on any online purchases so they can’t get carried away when playing a game or shopping.

Educate your kids on internet safety

Last of all, it’s very important that you educate and talk to your kids about internet safety. This includes what is OK to share and what is not online including personal details about themselves such as their address and whereabouts. You’ll also need to cover what to do if someone is saying or doing inappropriate things, or engaging in cyberbullying. It is very important that you always keep these communication channels open because if kids can come to you and talk about things they are unsure of it can help protect them as they navigate their online lives.
