Active Family Month Challenge – “Go For A Spin”

This week for the Mark Warner Active Family month challenge the theme for this week is ‘Go For A Spin’ ….. the possibilities lets face it were endless however I am not brave and therefore popping for a spin white water rafting or Sphereing  was so not going to happen at The Oliver’s Madhouse .. yes we are mad but not brave! however we did start the week with some quality time ‘going for a spin’ round the crazy golf course. We thought we would break ourselves into the challenge gently!

Active Family Month Challenge - "Go For A Spin" The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseSo with a new vigor we hitched it up a gear and took the challenge by the horns!

We finally took Joshua on his first bike ride, although he was too little to peddle we hired some bikes, hitched up his little buggy and set off!

As some of you already know I have been on a weigh loss mission and have lost over 4 stones and over recent weeks I have been attending 3 boot camps a week but nothing prepared me for the bike! …… I am sure bikes have got heavier … or I just need to get on one far more often?

I managed about 20 mins with Joshua on the back of my bike before I wanted to cough up my lungs on the dust track, so next it was Daddies turn!

Holding my hand in the air I have to say I enjoyed it far more with no Joshua on the back, the wind hitting my face and then turning to see Joshua’s little face as they passed me by.

Before setting out on this epic 1 hour long journey I had completed a boot camp session and my physical reserves was dropping. That and obviously years of neglecting my health and fitness were also not helpful! So when I started an incline that stopped me in my tracks I did for a split second want to cry! I know it didn’t seem steep but it was steeper than it looked!

I did persevere and got there in the end, which I found most empowering! however Joshua shouting from his prime position “Mummy it’s broke” did not help matters as by that stage I was well and truly knackered!

At just over an hour out on our first family bike ride, there were no injuries, plenty of laughs, 2 saddle sore bottoms, 3 of the Oliver’s covered in dust and sweat and a desire to go again! .. not bad for a start!

Although not to be outdone! after his sleep in the afternoon Joshua did try to get some peddle power in, albeit without peddles … but the thought was there!

Wow and go you and even more well done on your weight loss.
I do rather miss cycling In a way, fond memories of exploring while out on a bike ride.

For us out for a spin means something quite different though. We do a lot of circus skills in our house so when we go out for a spin it usually involves hula hoops, staff, poi and other such things other than that my small boy loves free running, climbing and jumping off pretty much anything he can!

Keep up the good work beautiful and continue to have fun

I haven’t been on a bike since I was 13 yrs old (And that was a very long time ago!) Your photo’s made me smile because we are off to Center Parcs next month and I am hiring one of those pod things for the Little Man. I was thinking that I would be towing him, but after reading this I’m thinking maybe it should be left to daddy. I could do with getting a little fitter, maybe I should join in with your challenge.

I do sometimes feel we don’t do enough to get our kids super active, but then, Mini-g is just 1 so has time! With Missy, she’s signed up to do tennis in the summer, and we do love being outdoors and playing in the park or garden. Does that count?? Your bike ride looks lovely though x

Good for you! I think most people would struggle cycling AND pulling along a toddler at the same time. Your thighs may have been aching like mad, but your body will thank you in the long run!

You are right! It is far harder to cycle with a buggy on a bike! I normally look forward to going downhill to rest my legs, but I don’t even like going down hill when towing kids! I applaud you! 🙂 xxx

How fab, You must have been out like a light that evening?! Great outing though, crazy golf is the best! And I seriously admire you biking bravery! I am USELESS on a bike and get completely out of breath within about 15 mins but that probably says more about me than about the bike 🙂 xx

Well done – I love cycling and have a toddler seat on the back of mine but that extra weight kills my legs!!
Isaac also got into a habit of wobbling which was a nightmare especially if on a busy road. I really want to try a trailer but it will have to wait now until baby is here!!
Well done on the weight loss xx

Brilliant photos. Looks fun! We don’t do a lot, unfortunately. My son is only 8 months so he’s yet to be out ‘keeping active’. We don’t drive though so I walk EVERYWHERE with the pram and was able to shift my baby weight pretty quickly. Can’t wait until he’s big enough to take him to play football etc!
