All mums out there will know that motherhood is a full-time job in itself. Constantly caring for a little human can be overwhelming and exhausting, leaving you with little or no time to yourself. It can also be very expensive! For those who have been floored by the sheer expense of a newborn, you’re not alone. And whilst you might have to cut back on a few luxuries you used to enjoy, there are still some ways to make some money on the side whilst still being a full-time mum.
What are the options?
Freelance work lends itself particularly well to working mums. Most of these opportunities can be done remotely from the comfort of your home and can be entirely self-managed. Some corporations also take into account the pressures of parenthood and offer extra flexibility for working parents.
If you are naturally a creative person, pick up your keyboard and start blogging. It can be very lucrative if done right, and prior knowledge of SEO, viral trends and clickbait articles can be really beneficial. If you’re busy during the peak posting times, schedule your post to go out at certain times so you don’t have to think about it. Freelance writing is also a great way to earn some money, as this work is often outsourced. Build up a portfolio of regular clients, advertise your services on freelancer sites and enjoy the freedom of managing your own time.
Podcasting is also a very popular choice. Find your subject of expertise, offer interesting insights and make some money on the side by finding a sponsor, putting ads on your site or uploading your podcast to large streaming services.
If you’re interested in beauty, why not open a nail salon from the comfort of your own home? Offer a variety of treatments, arrange appointments around your schedule and invest in great products, like acrylic nail kits, to boost your reputation and earn regular clients.

Other things to keep in mind
You might not be working full time, but many mums fall into the trap of feeling guilty for even trying to work whilst looking after a little one. It’s absolutely valid to still want to progress your career, even when you’re starting a family. Let go of the guilt because it will only hold you back.
Now that your time is more structured because of work, be fully present for all the family time in between and plan special activities that you will all enjoy. And if your job presents more responsibilities that you want to take on, reserve plenty of time to find a childcare provider who you fully trust. Having them around will open up countless more opportunities.
