Pregnancy & Birth Story – Joshua

I have wanted to write about this since I started my blog, however I have never felt in the right place mentally to put  it all together, so here it is:

Now at the beginning of my pregnancy we were so excited (you can read about it HERE) however at around 7-8 weeks pregnant our world turned upside down. It was a Thursday evening and Ollie had just got back from collecting a Chinese takeaway. I was stood in the kitchen about to plate up our tea when for a split second I thought I had pee’d. When I was hit with an almighty stomach cramp, I looked down and noticed that it wasn’t wee it was in fact blood.

I rushed to the toilet where I continued to bleed and since I was crying uncontrollably my Mum was called (thankfully they live just round the corner) We left Beth with my Mum and Dad and set off for the hospital.

Once I was taken into A&E a nurse very harshly told me that I had quite obviously lost my baby and they were too busy to give me a scan so I would have to go home and come back to the Early Pregnancy Unit on the Sunday morning (how cruel!)

So after waiting since Thursday night we set off on the Sunday for our scan. I was so scared and refused to look at the monitor. I was waiting for the words ‘your baby has gone’ what we got was ‘we have found a heartbeat’ I actually remember sobbing quite loudly and quite unreservedly.

She explained the only reason she could fathom was that since I had lost such a large amount of blood was that I had been  carrying twins and that we would never know for certain.

So after a few weeks rest I was back to work and things were going well (besides the morning sickness) until I had another bleed (nowhere near as much as before) and the most painful stomach cramps again.

At hospital I was this time scanned on arrival and it turns out I actually had something called a Corpus Lutheum Cyst. This what they thought was causing the current bleeding and pain problem so, after 24 hrs in hospital I was allowed home but told to take things easy.

To cut a very long story short (er ) I was actually admitted on 4 other occasions with blood loss and pain and each time we waited with bated breath for the heartbeat to be found …. Always successfully!

My Corpus Lutheum Cyst grew rapidly and at around week 19 of my pregnancy I was told it was the size of a grapefruit and I was at serious risk of an Ovarian Torsion (where the cyst twist the ovary) or it tearing away from my ovary and risked major blood loss for me and my baby.

I felt I owed it to my baby to hold tight, as general surgery was my only option and this would have risked putting me into premature labour and I risked loosing him. I refused and remained on bed rest at home with very regular scans to check to ensure it wasn’t still growing. I just wanted to wait will week 25 when I knew he would stand a chance.

So as D-day approached and the 25 week scan date arrived felt sick with dread. However the gods were shinning on us that day as it seems Joshua moving about had created a tiny puncture and the cyst was almost gone!

Throughout the rest of my pregnancy I suffered with acute SPD (you can read about it HERE) and was signed completely off work.

Then at around 30 weeks during a scan it was pointed out that not only was he going to be big, he also was doing the splits .. So after this little bombshell and that fact Beth was delivered by emergency section after she was too big for me to deliver it was decided that an elective section was the only way to go.

So on Friday 8th April 2011 I was wheeled into theatre for my elective section and I did so well, no tears until the local anesthetic went in and I then became a gibbering mess. Thankfully Ollie kept me calm and it all started……

Joshua was born at 12.22pm on Friday the 8th April weighing 8 lbs 4 ozs
