Recently on our trip to Sherwood forest something magical happened … Those of you that read my blog regularly may remember that Ollie, Joshua and I went on a Squirrel Hunt a little while ago and although it was a lovely trip we couldn’t find a single solitary Squirrel and to say I was a little disappointed would have been an understatement.
So last weekend on our way to Sherwood Forest there was only one mission … a full on Squirrel Hunt!
The first half of our visit from the Visitors Centre to the Major Oak came up empty on the Squirrel front. We did come across some rather cheeky Robins, however the squirrels really were elusive!
The further we wandered into the forest the more disheartened I became on the search .. Then something fantastic happened.
We reached a little crossroads where a fallen log and a bird table were located and amongst the hundreds of robins and blue tits was a very cheeky Squirrel!
He was so close I didn’t want to breathe for fear of scaring him off, it was almost like he knew he wanted to put on a show and every so often stopped to look right at me!
I must have spent 10 minutes watching this crazy critter until I thought it best to retreat. I thought Joshua would have been excited, however he was not.. Well maybe he was for the first 3 minutes.
After spotting this cheeky fella the squirrels kept on coming, we wondered though a little nook where the trees were packed tightly making it so very shaded and we could not believe what we saw … over a dozen squirrels all foraging in the undergrowth without a care in the world that they were being watched! It was almost like they had all awoken from hibernation together and were filling empty tummies .. It really was a sight to see.
So after our disappointing squirrel hunt previously, I can honestly say this one was more of a success than I could ever have imagined.
It really was a fantastically successful trip.

Glad you managed to find them this time. We went last week and managed to feed some, we found that kept the girls (and boys) more interested for well over an hour… great photos… #countrykids

at risk of being flamed; I’m glad you all enjoyed it but don’t you have squirrels round your way? they’re everywhere in East herts and pop into the garden often…x
lol no not at all .. we went in search a few weeks back and never saw one at all .. i was so disappointed
Out garden doesn’t get anything other the neighbourhood cats so never see many birds or squirrels xx
How fab, you finally found your squirrels, it sounds like you saw loads of them as well. They’re in abundance here so the idea of going on a squirrel hunt is odd to me, but I’m sure it’s great to see so many cheeky critters around when they’re not so commonly seen! honestly Fiona i was utterly thrilled! we really are lacking . as a child i remember them being everywhere but they seem fewer these days

You must come and visit us our park if full of squirrels that people feed. We haven’t done this yet, perhaps we should! We even have some that come and feed from our bins and we get notices to tell us we can’t feed them lol

nice that you finally got to see some, it is typical though when you go out specifically to see them and you dont find any.
I think they just grow up so use to humans being there that they do not bother too much. Seeing a big group of them would have been nice.
We have a local park where they all come down and pinch the bread people are putting out for the ducks.
