Should You Teach Your Kids a Foreign Language?

Should You Teach Your Kids a Foreign Language? The Oliver\\\'s Madhouse

Studies have shown that younger people have better chances of learning a new language because they are better learners. Also, the fact that their brains are still developing helps them to grasp language easier. Studies also show that exposing kids to a second language starting even from a young age can be highly beneficial.

Benefits of learning a second language for as a child

Here are some significant benefits of learning the second language while young:

  • Promotes creativity and problem solving

One of the main benefits of learning a second language at a young age is that it boosts essential skills like creativity and the ability to solve problems. For example, children with a bilingual advantage are more likely to solve issues and find solutions faster because learning a second language allows them to become more mentally flexible.

  • Improved cognitive focus

Allowing your kids to learn a new language is also highly beneficial to their cognitive development. For instance, it helps to boost brain function. Therefore, it allows them to become more intelligent by promoting better concentration because they have to put work into the learning process. This is especially the case when the second language is not as similar to their first language.

  • Work opportunities

Being bilingual is always an advantage when it comes to working. Allowing your kids to have a second language at their disposal will help them stand out from others when looking for work later on in life. It will also allow them to work in places like embassies.

  • Boosting self-confidence

When kids learn a second language, it helps them feel accomplished. It also sets them apart from their peers. By doing so, it helps to boost their self-confidence and self-esteem.

How to teach children a second language at home at a reasonable price

methods of teaching a second language:

  • Use software for language learning

The easiest way to teach a second language at home would be hiring a tutor for in-person, one-to-one lessons. However, this may be very expensive. Therefore, language-learning software is the next best thing. The internet is packed with a wide range of programs designed for students (and adults!) to learn a second language. For example, on the iOS platform, a great option is the Babbel app to learn languages through interactive and fun lessons. Kids will enjoy the extra screen-time and not even realise they are learning!

  • Spending time with a native speaker

If you have a native speaker in your community, it may be a good idea to let your kids learn a second language from them. The interaction doesn’t have to be physical. For instance, if you have a native-speaking friend, you arrange video interactions or one on one interactions regularly. This is the easiest way to learn, mainly because the teacher is not a stranger.

  • Using video and audio media

You can also use audio and videos to help your kids learn a new language. Such videos can include music or elaborate lessons from a reliable tutor. This is an inexpensive way to introduce a second language

Without proper motivation, leaning a second language can be incredibly boring. Therefore, the following tips will help you make the process fun;

  • Partake in the process with them

You can make the process fun by doing it together with your kids. Learning together will encourage and motivate them to maintain interest and look forward to the process because they spend time with you.

  • Emphasize the advantages of learning the second language

You can also motivate your kids by highlighting the benefits of learning the new language. Note that this tip will work better in kids at an age where you can reason with them.

  • Allowing them to live the culture

You can do this by allowing them to listen to foreign radio, read foreign books, newspapers, and watch foreign shows. You can go as far as letting them cook and eat foods from the culture in question. And one day when things go back to normal, allow them to travel and explore the world.

Have you tried any of the tips mentioned above before? If you have, be sure to leave a comment on how it has worked for you.
